Cleaning old brass locks

Member
I found an old brass lock and looking for ideas on cleaning it up.
Any suggestions?

I use #0000 steel wool and dish soap. Rub aggressively and most of the dirt will come off. I wear disposable gloves, so I can rub hard. If you over polish it, brass tarnishes back rather quickly just exposed to air. This I use on almost anything I dig up except silver, gold, or rarer coins.

If it has a nice green patina on it leave it alone.

I found a really old brass lock and cleaned it now I wish I hadn't. It had a thick green patina before I cleaned it and I wish it still did.
