Cleaning iron/mineral stained gold.

Crenman

Member
I am back to scuba detecting again and have found a pretty fair amount of gold latley.
My problem is some of it is beautiful if it were not a rosey black tint. I can seam to get it all real clean in the cracks and designs. A lot of the lakes I hunt are full of iron ore and its like iron particles cling to hold that's been there a while. Some of the muddy lakes will leave a black grey some time pink tint on the gold. Any suggestions on how to clean? I have a home made electrolisis u know the mason jar and ss spoon etc etc. And it will get the surface junk off but not the rest. I have to polish the heck out of it after that even.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Chad<><

scotch brite pad works well or just get a buffing wheel on a dremmal tool that cleans and polishs it at the same time

Soap, warm water, and an ultrasonic jewelery cleaner.
You might try soaking it in something like lime-away, then use the ultrasonic.
Other than that, I would talk with my jeweler-friend to see what they suggest from that point. Good luck, and let us know what you come up with.
