Cleaning Garrett grip?

New member
Does anyone have a good way to clean the foam grip on my AT Pro? I find the rest of the detector easy to clean with WD40, but that won't work for the grip. I just thought someone may have thought of something I haven't.

My only thought is to soak with water and squeeze, then allow to dry. Is that how everyone else is doing it?

I use baby wipes and just squeeze out the dirt. A rag would work too, but I like the white wipes because I can see if it is truly clean or not.

I wrap the grips on my detectors with black insulation ( electrical ) tape, keeps them dry and dirt free

wipes over with a damp cloth

Here is what I use and it works great. Go to a Tractor Supply store or someplace that sell horse leg wrapping. You can get a roll of any color you want for a couple of bucks. Wrap your grip two or three times, it will stick until you want to take it off. When your grip gets bad just replace the wrap. Try it I'm sure you will like it.

My AT Pro is waterproof. I just soak it in a little tub with dishsoap and water to get the gunk soaked out and rinse it off. Those Shamwow things absorb water real good for drying. WD 40 works well making things look nice but I've found it also attracts the dust.

I have also used clear shipping tape to clean surface dust and grime. Wind that clear shipping tape around it, then pull it off. It pulls alot of dirt off with it. I have also used rubbing alcohol.....but that was to get the stick crap that electrical tape leaves behind after it's been on there for a long time and been in hot conditions (summer hunting). But the poster who said that, since the unit is waterproof, a dip and scrup in the bathtub, would likely be the best. JMO

Take off the arm cuff and slide the foam grip off and give it a good soap and water cleaning and then let it air dry.

Gotta be careful with alcohol and the rubber grip. Could dry it out and make it brittle. I just wipe it all down with a damp cloth.

Yes, it's just what I do.
best regards

To keep mine clean, I wrap my grips with horse leg wrap like this http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/powerflexreg%3B-value-pack-woodland-camo-pack-of-4
Tennis racket wrap would also work

I use dish washing soap on the grip.
ANd like the other guy said, I squeez and squeez until I get
it clean. When it rains, I tape a wash cloth around the grip now, so
the foam grip stays relatively clean. Less cleaning to do.

From the land of the Bluenose.....well me bouy if rinsy doesn't rinse it. And Dove doesn't then fug it. I hear you it does tend to get dirty and needs to be cleaned. Lots of good suggestions!. Happy hunting.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I cleaned it with a bit of dishsoap and water this time, but think I'll find a good wrap for it like many of you have suggested.

I am new to metal detecting. I just got my AT Pro two weeks ago. Being excited about the whole thing I have been out in some pretty wet and muddy conditions. Since I am an outdoors-man, I am used to being in the weather and calling it recreation. :) Up until now I thought I was the only one that did not like the grip getting and holding dirt. I thought Garrett should have made it from the stuff they make the high end pool floats from (I think it is called EVA or Vinyl-covered closed-cell foam).

I have been wrapping mine with 6" wide stretch wrap (available at office supply stores). It stays cleaner and leaves no residue. I just put extra wraps on, and peel away the dirty parts to expose clean area. When it gets down to last few wraps I just peel it all of and replace. Works for me. At least until something better comes along. I will be searching for a bicycle grip that suits be for more permanent solution.

Dang, the only things I ever clean are my connections and o-rings, I would spend to much time cleaning. Thats just me though!

Tommy Montana, I've been digging in the mud all spring. That's why the grips are bothering me too.

Black Davy, time is definitely a factor. That's why I'm not in to giving the whole detector a bath. If I can wipe it down quickly, I am more likely to do it. I can wipe the whole detector down in a couple minutes, except for the grip. But, I don't have near as much gear to clean as you.

I just wipe it down occasionally. At the Beach, if near a shower, I'll remove the coil cover, and rinse of.

Ya mine sill finds stuff dirty or not soon as iwould clean it it will get dirty agian

I'd just use soap and water. They DO come off, if you want to clean it thoroughly. I wrap my grip in plastic wrap, like Saran wrap, then blue painter's tape. I know it's kind of overkill, but it keeps the grip clean.

I see an aftermarket idea coming on, custom grips, maybe rubber. A none absorbent material ? Pimp my ride style:)
