Cleaning coins

What is the best process to clean coin finds? The coin tumbler, peroxide?

Here is my advice:

Be careful!

First, know your coins. Get a coin value guide and grading standards guide. Learn the key dates for the coins that you may encounter. Learn how cleaning can effect grading. A crappy looking coin can grade much higher than one that has been cleaned and all scratched to hell.

If you find silver, don't rub the dirt off. I leave the dirt on and soak them in water for several hours. Most of the grit falls off in the soaking. Then I run them under a stream of water and use my wife's soft makeup brush to get any film off. I let them air dry, grab the jewelers loop and grade them. Then to the coin sleeve, and to the find book.

As far as pennies go, well, I don't know, I only find silver. LOL

Thanks lud buthave you ever used a coin tumbler.I believe what you are saying is that you wouldnt put your silver in one and only the coins that arent worth much.I just dont think my better half would like it if i used her make up brush, yikes.I have only found i silver so far after getting my md it is a large ring with the head of head of greatful dead jerry garcia and i also found an old green line token but i want to hunt all the time now this is crazy.I live in northern ky and the parks are trash ridden but i love the mine lab quattro.I am ready to trade in on etrac or explorer.I do have a couple of things do i need a larger coil to search deeper, and i had a reading of 38 yesterday and dug a hole the size of a dinner plate but couldnt find.Wasnt there everytime i checked but kept popping back up when ready to fill hole in.Ground mineralization ya think? Thanks charlie
