Cleaning Coil Cover

For one reason or another, I have neglected cleaning my coil cover. On the Pro coil, it is extremely easy for fine dirt-sand to get under this cover. I have seen erratic performance by not keeping the coil clean. Yesterday I cleaned the entire detector and the amount of dirt under the cover was amazing. I will not let this happen again.

Now for the good. I hit a place where silver is hard to find. I only went to this place because my other spots were having large events. I did not expect to find much, but my first find set the tone. A deep signal that had silver written all over. From 9 inches comes a woman's sterling heart ring with a date of 1946. Wow, maybe the clean coil was the reason. The second dig was about to get better. A very similar signal and I was guessing another silver piece. My pinpointer was sounding off at 8 inches so I was careful not to hit the target. At 9 inches I saw a large silver disc that was almost completely vertical. 1942 standing liberty half! My next two targets were a no date buffalo nickel and a wheat penny.

At this point, I had already had a complete day. I dug a clad quarter and a memorial penny. After digging the penny, my Garrett carrot went bonkers. It would not shut off. I removed the battery and re-installed it. It came back on when the battery made contact. I kept trying to get it to shut off, but it is broke. Still under warranty. I have a three year old original Propointer that still works. I have had five Propointers and every one broke within the first year. Garrett replaced them all with new ones. Hopefully they will do the same.

I took off all of my coil covers too. I was a fool only cleaning them once a year.
Not anymore. I usually don’t scrub the soil or sand but there are times I forget.

I used to hunt a lot of fields that were rough. I always cleaned my coil cover once in a while. No big deal!
