i've been getting flack from my bank about the colour of some of the decimal coins i have found.we wash and tumble all of the coins before depositing them in our bank.we use fine sand, liquid detergent and water for about an hour in the tumbler.what i woul;d like to know is what your formulas and methods are? someone in usa says he uses hot sauce, what type? someone else said vinegar and salt ,in what proportions and for how long?are we not tumbling long enough?someone must have the tried and true method.what do you all do? without electrolysis, the missus says no way. hh blowfly

Hi,
I am in OZ. Got this from the Beachcombing with a metal detector, by Keith Hetherington. This is for modern coins-1 tablespoon salt, 1/2 cup vinegar. Make up 2 solutions, don't mix the goldies with the silver. Around 6 at a time, check every couple of minutes. Can scrub with a toothbrush for the more dirty coins. Rinse under cool running water then wash/soak in warm soapy water. Dry off.
This works well, some stay nice and clean but others seem to stay tarnished to a degree. I don't bother taking to the bank, just use down when you go to do shopping.( no shop keeper has ever refused any coins I have cleaned). If you have a self serve check out you can "get rid of a few" this way. There is always the vending machine as well. Hope this helps
