Cleaned up way better than I hoped for!

Dug this last week not far from the Barber dime I found in the old city park. Was 2-3” deep and sounded off a solid 60 and non ferrous on the Legend. Ok, shallow and non F so dig. I knew it was a folding knife but it was solid caked in mud and grass and leaves etc. Figured it was a lost cause but thought I would at least try and fix it.
Monday I washed it in hot water and a nylon brush, enough to clearly see “M2.0” on the handle. Still a lot of dirt etc in between the handles and the blade was stuck.
Next step was boiling in hot water which actually cleaned out the majority of the crud. Immediately hosed down in WD40 and let it set awhile. Took toothpick and brass brush and gingerly kept cleaning. Boiled a second time and WD40 again. Well I’ll be damned the blade opened fairly easy. Kept picking and spraying…… finally got the blade lock working to where it would release the open blade. Next, used 4.0 steel wool to remove what rusty spots were left and polished up the blade and used a ceramic pocket sharpener and Wa-La, almost back to an MS rating!!
Ends up its a S&W M&P rescue tool. Has glass punch, paracord/seatbelt cutter and 4” tanto style serrated blade. Cutter is probably toast but I see it can be replaced.

New tool in the truck for generic cutting purposes and it was free (I dont charge myself for menial labor!)

Great restoration!

Really no idea how long it was there. No real nasty rust on the cheaper metal parts but thinking at least a year…. No indication a pocket clip was on it.

Thanks!
