Cleaned a copper coin with extreme heat.

Found a 1847 large penny but in terrible condition with a thick hard green crust, the worst I ever found. The field it was found in was scraped off 6 inches, field now has huge piles of dirt, will soon be a 25 acre park, hope they redistribute the dirt and not haul it away. Also found two flat metal buttons, and last summer found a 1781? half reale and a half penny there. Tried cleaning this bad penny with hot hydrogen peroxide, didn't do anything. Then I hit it with a propane torch. The green crust couldn't take the heat, began glowing red and was gone in 10 seconds. Plunged it in a can of cold water while it was still hot, but that may not be necessary? Anyway, the metal looks fine. All the pits are visible and clean right down to the bottom. Coin is as clean as it will ever be again and can now see the date. Jabbo
