Any ideas on how to clean this copper medallion.I have a tumbler. Can't find anybody in my area who will try.

I certainly dont think I would put that in a tumbler . Looking at the pic, it appears to have
been gilt at one time, a little remains on the bottom left. I is very unique, any idea on age ?
Ghost, Coinnut , give your expertise on cleaning , me, Im not sure I would try .
Beautiful Find !

hi jog. i don't believe i would clean the medallion. it's hard to clean brass and copper without it looking like it had been cleaned. there are ways to do it, but it becomes a very involved process, and one that most people would not dare to do.
some things are better left uncleaned. but, the piece is yours, jog. you can always practice on some old copper cents with a similar patina, and see how they turn out. electrolysis would probably do well, as would having it ultrasonically cleaned at a jeweler's or coin shop. good luck, and keep us posted. hh,

I will spend more time trying to find another reputable jeweler who is more qualified. thanks for all the info and i will keep everyone posted.
