I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I bought a Explorer II a few months ago but due to living in Michigan I have not been able to use it much with this harsh winter. I came to this forum to learn about the Explorer and how to best use it. I feel that I have gained a wealth of information reading ALL THE POST. Some at first seemed to be way to technical and over my head. But after being here a while I can now go back and re-read them and they make much more sense to me. Some are still to deep for me but I get the basics of where the poster was going in their thoughts. I bought this machine because of the great depth but most important to me is the ID of possible targets. I want to dig as little trash as I can. To me that is what this machine is designed for. As others have posted you can find real deep machines with no discrimination.
I actually think by me not being able to go out and detect right a way has turned into a Hugh benefit. I have read the manual several times and countless forums with setup programs. I know what I have to do to have the greatest chance for success without the frustration period at first learning the Explorer.
There is an unbelievable amount of adjustments that can be made to this machine. That to me is one of it

and I'm glad you decided to post rather than lurk.
My post below may seem harsh, but I REALLY want this to be a forum where people can ask questions, give answers, and feel confident in their new machine, and in the knowledge they share.
There are dozens of forums that cater to the established users where they can post their new finds, how a particular program was or was not suitable for their detecting style or expected finds.
Some will argue that the concept of "expected finds" in and of itself is flawed since rejecting anything by definition points out that some targets WILL be missed. I understand and can respect that. What I can't respect is the assertion that one man's (or woman's) way of detecting is the only sensible option, after all, as you indicate, the options MAKE the machine, at least in my (our) estimation.
I'm here to help if I can, and I will forego the temptation to correct every post I disagree with, I will strive only to answer posts for which I have the answers, or ask questions for those things I don't.
Your comments regarding the season being a great time to learn the books are entirely correct, you can arm yourself with a bredth of knowledge you can put to immediate use one the factory settings are no longer suitable for your emerging prowess with the detector. Again, the very fact that we have OPTIONS with our detector of choice is a great thing, it's as though we have several machines in one, and we can use those features to help make detecting -FUN-.
Thanks for a well thought out post, and I wish you the best with your new machine. It won't be long now before you can get out there and dig, so I hope that time comes as soon as possible for you.
Best of luck, and thanks again for speaking your mind. Great post.

Where in michigan are you from, port huron here. Also to add to your comments. Its should be a friendly place to go here, keep the name calling and bickering out.Even the critisicm is not good.We are here,a lot of us, waiting for the snow to melt, the ground to thaw and the adventure to begin.Keep that formost in your minds.Lets have a good time here and try to take each person with a grain of salt.really,If someones post is off, maybe it's what works for them.Maybe there even misinformed, but keep it cool, chill some.scott.

Jim, your absolutely correct about what your saying. I like you, like to learn and sometimes I bite my tongue on certain topics. I suppose I could reply in a negative manner but why? If any person takes the time to post something that I know nothing about, I will listen and listen some more. This is a great forum to learn. Thanks everyone for the knowledge you have given me. I will now shut up and listen again.
