Classic SL IDX ?? Starter Detector

Looking for my wife a starter detector. I found a Classic SL IDX, can I get some feed back on this model? This ones kind of odd, (at least I've never seen it) Classic SL on the control box and IDX (in red lettering)on the target ID view, screen. Another question, how does it compare with Whites entry level detectors under $200.00 (coinmaster, prizm) Any help would be appreciated. thanks

You have one of Whites best efforts. With the smaller 5.3 or 600 coil that detector is probably the best trash beater made, excellent in iron. A nice quick response machine. Monte has written reams of material on this machine, it is one of his faves. Mr. Bill has some killer mods for this bad boy , you should investigate.
Just do a search on Findmall.:wiggle:

Hi All, I need to know if the Classic 111 SL hunts with tone or how do you tell the difference from coins or junk? This Classic has Mr Bills mod done on it. Thanks Dean

I learned about the IDX on the Whites Main Detecting Forum, by bringing up the "search" option at the top of this page, type "Classic ID" in the search messages then "exact phrase" search authors "Monte" then enter "all dates". This should bring up about 5 pages of information. This little Gem from White's is a real sleeper, it is so good most people don't believe it. I've had a XLT,DFX and now have a 5900 Di Pro SL, 6000 Pro XL and the IDX Pro that has been modified by Mr. Bill. This detector is a slow sweep detector with fast recovery and target seperation, simple to use and to understand. I've had mine for over two years and will never part with it.I posted how good of a detector it is over on the Explorer Forum and got laughed off the thread, even got accused of smoki'n weed, I may be be crazy but not in that way LOL

The 'SL' refers to the "Slim-Line" control housing which was introduced with the XLT. The IDX was developed by adding the TID circuitry and display of the Classic ID to a Classic III SL. There were some mild enhancements with the IDX Pro, although they both share the same controls and general performance. The "upgrades" that I liked were going to a non-shiny decal under the display as well as a subdued decal on the coil.

White current low-cost, "entry level" model is the Coinmaster. It is slightly lighter than the Classic IDX, but it isn't a durable. It doesn't have the same quick-response and recovery of the Classic IDX. It lacks the smaller accessory coils of the Classic IDX. It doesn't have the same accessible Ground Balance trimmer that affects both the All Metal and Discriminate mode as the Classic IDX. It calls for periodic swapping of the two 9V batteries as they don't provide equal draw like the excellent 8-AA battery system of the Classic IDX. it doesn't have the very versatile broad-range variable Discriminate adjustment of the Classic IDX.

Is the new Coinmaster a bad detector? Nope, not at all! As a matter of fact I factored owning a new Coinmaster for certain applications in my personal detector battery. However, I am a very devoted fan of the excellent-working Classic III SL, Classic ID, Classic IDX, and IDX Pro models. I'm especially thankful that "Mr. Bill" Crabtree provides an excellent modification for these models that provides more manual control to add to the detector's versatility.

A clean and good-working Classic IDX is well worth a modest investment for a beginner, a novice, or an avid hobbyists who enjoys slow-motion, quick-response performance with excellent visual TID qualities.

Just a biased opinion, but I think you get the idea. :)

the classic series are very good detector, the idx pro is an excellent choice for around 200.00 dollars. A classic sl for 200.00 is a good buy if it is modded. good luck jim
