Is $40 a good price for a Classic SL I in good working condition? How deep will this detector go on a clad dime?

and realizing that when it was out it was the absolute lowest-priced White's discriminator .... FORTY BUCKS is GREAT!

For what it is, and can do, I'd say buy it. I would, if I found one around here in great conditions that worked well for $40.

Turns out that when I got there to pickup the detector it was a Classic II SL, so I guess I got a VERY good deal.

Oh! yes you gotta deal if it works, And i'll tell you I went from the ClassicII to the MXT, and i found more in the two years of the classic than I did the first 3 years with the MXT...It's as great turn on

The Classic II SL's are great turn on and go machines. I've found plenty of stuff with mine. I bought it new around 13 years ago and it was around $200 if I remember correctly. Great find!! Tony
