Classic III SL Vs Eagle Spectrum

Rebel1

Member
How much, if any performance difference between a Mod'ed Classic III SL and an Eagle Spectrum? Other than the Eagle having a VID Screen will they both perform about the same?

Hi,
The Classic is a 2 filter unit.
The Eagle is a 4 filter unit.
Each has its

Yea, i know. I had an Eagle before, so i know about it. I have used a number of Tesoro's and have no problem without an ID screen. Just wondered if they both get about the same depth on coins, etc. given similar soil and coils. I know the Classic is supposed to be better in high nail areas sifting through the Iron.

Rebel1, no experience with the Eagle, but......

In my experience the Classics, coil for coil, goes as deep as my sadly traded off XLT, deeper than the DFX that I used to own, but not quite as deep as my cream puff 5900 Di Pro SL (CB).Those detectors are considered to be faster sweep speed models than the Classics. The Classics work better in the trash than the faster sweep models, as they can be slow walked down to a creep, inch by inch very slowly. Or they can be swept rather fast if the conditions warrant. Just my two zincs.

Hey Rebel1! I think it was You that asked me a few days ago that you didn't know that the Classic3SL has an All Metal mode.Pushing the trigger forward puts in All Metal with Threshold.
If You are in the Disc mode..set the toggle from Normal to "Black Sand" and set the Disc for Min and now you have an All Metal Accept Mode that is Silent and gets excellent depth.
It will detect ALL metals in this mode just like the Trigger clicked forward but you will have quiet operation. That setting will give you the best depth in disc.I hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Ronk. The Classic III SL i am getting has the Mr Bill mods. Questrion. With the external GB and threshold knobs if i set the disc low, GB it, and then turn the threshold to where it just turns silent will it affect the performance? I am not a big fan of a threshold based mode and prefer to hunt in a silent mode. Can i do it without sacrificing performance?

I'm not 100% sure what your'e asking but it doesn't matter where the disc setting is at when you ground balance. When you are in the disc mode the detector is silent search. No threshold at all in that mode. You Do need to ground balance in AM mode first because it carries over to the disc mode on the C3SL. If you are asking if you can run the threshold silent in AM mode then you can but I wouldn't turn in down too low or you'll peformance and depth.Adjust it very slow just until you don't hear it but even then you Might loose a little depth depending on the type of ground and the targets you are after. You really won't gain much by adjusting to run silent in the AM mode.
With the Trigger toggle switch in the middle position you are in a Silent search disc mode with No threshold. But You need to Ground balance first in AM mode and then switch to Disc mode.
With the Trigger toggle switch pushed forward you are in All Metal mode with a threshold. You Can run it silent but I myself wouldn't because of what I already stated. When you Pull the Trigger Towards you then that puts the detector in the PinPoint mode. With the Trigger you can release and then pull again and it will narrow down the signal to aid in PinPointing.
As I said earlier...If You don't like to hear a Threshold You can flip the toggle to "Black Sand" mode and put the Trigger in middle position and set the Disc to min and have the same as All Metal but without the Threshold and it will get Very good depth.
I'm sure I probably confused you with some of this.Disc Mode is Silent. All Metal Mode has a Threshold but for Best performance I really wouldn't run it silent because I see no advantage in it myself. I've really never operated mine like that because I see no advantage. If You want Silent Search All Metal without threshold then use the "Black Sand" mode like I described.

Thanks Ronk, i didn't know that the Disc mode was silent. I am still trying to decide whether to keep the Classic that is coming or the Eagle Spectrum that is coming. I guess i will need to try each of them and see which i prefer. Thanks again.

I've never used the Spectrum but I have had this same Classic for so many years it's just like part of my family! I know it very well. There is nothing about it that I don't like.It has what's needed and doesn't have what's Not needed. It gets the job done without any problems. It gets such excellent battery life and even better with headphones.I don't know what the last year was that the 6.59khz Classic 3SL went out of production but I am happy to say that it has never let me down and has Never had to be sent back for any repairs. It's a Great Analog detector that that will do alot for you IF you take the time to learn it and it IS easy to learn.Just keep both the Spectrum and the Classic so you'll have a backup or just learn them both. The Classic doesn't have a meter or tone ID but that's never kept it from doing it's job.I won't get rid of mine. The setting on the Disc dial is just as accurate as a meter once you learn where the various targets are found or rejected and sometimes the Disc setting is More accurate than some meters. I've used this one for years and I know what it's telling me most of the time though I Do get surprised once in a while. If you like to hunt jewelry...don't let the 6.59 Khz scare you away thinking you Have to have a higher frequency because You don't.It can still find some very small jewelry and very small buttons and and tiny brass items especially with a small coil.
I recently found a little bitty maybe a rivet..I'm not real sure what it was but it was very tiny using my small coil.I also found a nice silver dime that other detectors missed for some reason or another. The Classic was built to last and Whites Does build Great quality detectors.
