Classic III SL on the way :)

I made a good deal with a forum friend on a cherry one. Paid under 150 for it. I have obviously been scouring every forum and internet source on getting the most out of it. I have plans in the future to buy a 5.3 coil for it. Finally joined the White's family :)

Hi,
Best thing you can do is to send it to Mr. Bill so he can install manual threshold and ground balance pots.
That will increase your depth capabilities.

Great plan, but he no longer does those mods. I wish there was someone else that can do them.

Hi,
Is that what you have heard or did he actually say that himself ??
I know that he has moved, but he should have settled in by now.
His phone # is on his avatar.
If is wouldn

That is from a PM directly from him. Wish someone could have taken over for him.

Bucksport,

The mods are not really needed, a small slotted screwdriver is all that is needed to adjust GB, once set it rarely needs adjusting again. And yes I do own and use one of these excellent detectors, also have the metered IDX Pro with the mods and can tell no difference in performance.

Thanks Hombre :) I plan on using it at my schools. Don't think I will need it to go past 6" anyway. Once I decide that the GB is set I don't plan on messing with it anyway.

Bucksport,

Once you get the ClllSL, just set the sensitivity to Max, pull the trigger to put it in the all-metal mode and find a clean piece of ground. Raise and lower coil from 8" to down around 1" from ground and listen to the threshold. It should rise in volume just a 'hair' with a slight positive increase in response. Turning the little GB screw under 'made in America' decal counterclockwise will make a positive adjustment and clockwise will go negative. Only when changing search coils will you have to GB again, unless you run into some mineralized ground.I have checked out two IDX's for my hunting buddies and they were spot on with the GB right out of the box. Also when set to Max sensitivity, which I can get away with most anywhere, you will get way better than 6", depending on coil size of course. HH and good luck with a great little detector that is big on performance.

Hi,
I have to disagree with hombre.
Proper ground balance is the most important factor to attain max. depth.
There is no way, an out of the box setting will achieve optimum performance in different types of soil.
Fiddling around with a tiny screwdriver is much more of a hassle than turning a pot to the right setting.
I should know - cause I do not have the Mr. Bill mods on my Classic.
And if you do any detecting, you will encounter different mineralized ground conditions.
Sometimes, espacially at the beach, only a few feet apart.
But don

skookum, much appreciate your opinion on this. The only point I need to make is that my soil is very mild. I hunt school grounds with neutral soil. I have hunted them for the last few years with machines without GB, and have dug items below 6". Also I do not hunt on beaches very often, and when I do I already have a machine with manual GB :)

I was able to mod my Classic ID myself using the instructions Mr Bill posted elsewhere. The difference is amazing. In air tests it hits a dime at a little over 10" with the stock coil in discrim mode, maxed sens and low discrim. My ground is tough mineralized clay, and after ground balancing (I have to do it often) I can run it nearly maxed out. There's some chatter but not too much that I can't pick out the goodies.
Shoot me a PM and I'll point you to the directions.

Thanks wayne for the info. PM sent. Also many thanks to Hombre, and all the great Monte posts:)

It arrived today :) What a gem this machine is. It was treated very good in it's past life. The coil looks to have seen very little use.

Bucksport,

It will run just as good as it looks, and it looks great. The stock 950 coil will work good for you if you work it slow in the trashy spots. The Classics have a fast response & quick recovery that just gets better with the addition of smaller coils like the 5.3 BullsEye, 5.3 Black Max or Blue Max 600. I have my Classic lll SL set up and GB'd with a Blue Max Snooper 350 coil, the little 4

the Classic SL series (SL housing and slide-in 8-AA battery tray), and the Coinmaster Classic models (more squarish box w/3-9V batteries) that preceded them, were better detectors than most White's Dealers appreciated, and offer better performance than most consumers might imagine. The were designed for a market that was presumed to be more "entry level" or "beginner level" but for those of us who are a bit more savvy, we found them to be some of the best detectors, then, prior and to this day, for hunting in iron nail infested sites, working close to metal structures such as urban playground equipment or old building rubble, and a definite detector to having our personal detector arsenal.

My #1 use detector is my MXT Pro w/5.3 Eclipse (6

Monte, as always the best, most helpful info ever :)
