Classic III finds

New member
I was always a fan of the classics but did not use them a lot. 2 years ago I used a classic II in the woods here with great succes. Where my fisher F70 [sold] was a nightmare to use, the classic II did the job smoothly.

Recently I bought a classic III and used it last sunday on a so called ''hunted out'' farmfield. I had to get used a bit, but I became very familiar with the cl III and I was so impressed with it's performance. Found several items mostly from the 19th,18th and 17th century. The wrapped piece of metal is a part of a 1930's bicycle's tag. I rinsed all items but still have to clean them good.

I always loved the classics for the looks.. they look good. Are so solid, batterysystem is tops and when you turn the knob on/off you can feel the quality unlike some other good brands.

What I want to say is, the field that I detected sunday is in fact tesoro and compass territory. You can forget to get the fisher CZ and 1200 series there [exept maybe the 1236?] In use since Roman times and loaded with iron bits.
I was very impressed that the classic III performed so well.

I have a 5.3 coil on the way... can't wait.

Thanks for looking, Eric.

Nice finds, the classic is doing you very well!

Very interesting. Nice finds.
Does the Classic III have a VDI or do you
have to just listen to the tones to get a feel for
what the target is?

Katzy,
Just to elaborate, in case you are only recently examining the Classic detectors, or considering the purchase of one.
The Classic III SL, IDX and IDX Pro have these features in common:

- A Black Sand switch which shifts the discrimination down near the zero phase point and
- A frequency shifting control, allowing you to vary the detectors transmit freq.

I also believe the IDX Pro came equipped with the 9.5", 950 coil.

I have a Mr. Bill modded Classic ID, which is yet another player in the "Classic field."
It doesn't have the 'Black Sand' or 'Freq Shift' functions, but retains the TID module.

Otherwise, it is just like these others and can use the same coils as they. This holds true for all of them, I might add.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And in case you missed it, the Mr. Bill mods include the "bringing out" of the Ground Balance and THRESHOLD adjust functions, while adding a boost to the high end of the SENS range. This can be done to ALL the Classic detectors, as far as I know and places these controls as a user feature on the panel.

I used to have a Classic III 'Coinmaster,' the older style. I did the GB and THRESH mods myself, adding them to the rear panel.
Today, I would just commission Mr. Bill to do it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

'PS. I could also have Mr. Bill add the 'Black Sand' and 'Frequency' control features to my Classic ID, just to be thorough. So far, I don't really see the need in my usage. That may be something to look at over the winter, when Bill is holed up in his shop.

Nice finds, congrats. that belt buckle looks like the one i found about three months ago. CL3 is a great MD
