Classic IDX Mr. Bill mods... Help Mr. Bill!

Picked up a sweet classic IDX and had a local electronics expert mod it following Mr. Bill's posted instructions. Here's the issue. It seems to work fine, but the ID is way off. It IDs quarters as nickel and nickels as quarters. Square tabs come in as zincs and zincs ID as tabs. It's like the ID circuit is wired backwards. Is this even possible to do? The gentleman who did the work is more than qualified and comes highly recommended. I know if it is a wiring issue he will gladly make it right. I just need some advice as to what to tell him to look for as he is not a metal detector tech.

Mr. Bill, if you're out there I could really use the masters help,

Lee,take your top box off 8 screws 4 on top, leave speaker screws alone, there are 2 screws on the front 2 on the back. With these screws off the box can be removed. The plug with the ribbon unplug and turn 180 and plug back in,this should fix your problem.Hope this helps.HH Ron

Thanks guys for the help. I pulled the battery and carefully opened the case and turned the ribbon plug around. When I turned it on, it made a weak low tone and that was it. No more sound, nothing on the meter. I hope I didn't kill it. I reopened the case and looked for pinched wires etc. Didn't see any problems. Replaced the batteries with new ones and tried again. No joy. Any other advice besides taking it back to the electronics expert and letting him trouble shoot it?

When correctly plugged in, the marked wire of the ribbon cable will be positioned at the rear of its recepticle where there is a very small corresponding symbol on the circuit board. Installing it backwards should not ordinarily cause any problem except for a malfunction of the display.

There is now added wiring in the case, so be sure you haven't shorted something out putting it back together. Check the other plugs (which are keyed together) as for being completely plugged in. Look for any wires that have become disconnected. You can set the coil up on a stack of books or other non-metallic object and do a test with the case apart. I tested mine during the modification process.

Test your battery, should be at least 12V with new alkalines. Even a cheap multimeter from Big-Box is good enough for this.

Use care not to overtighten the screws on reassembly.

Wanted to give everyone an update on the my sick modified Classic IDX. I took it by to the technician who performed the mod after work today. I explained the problem and he opened her up looking for loose connections or damage. Everything was in order so we tried turning the ribbon connector over and it worked but the display was IDing high conductors as low and low as high just as it had done for me yesterday. Next he tried jumping the resistor mod to the ID. No change. As we continued to look it over totally bewildered as to what it could be he noticed that the ribbon looked twisted so he untwisted it and realized that he had reinstalled the display upside down! What a relief. I thought that I had destroyed a great detector. So note to those doing the mod themselves, check the orientation of the ID screen as you reassemble the ID pod. It will fit right side up or up side down. Lesson learned.
