Classic 5ID or Ace 250

Anniversary of 15 years coming up end of this month and wonderful wifey say's. Pick the detector you want ( some price restrictions ). So need input on Classic 5ID or ACE250. Live in NM no problem with soil and mainly look for coins at parks and old houses. OR should I look for quality used one on the forums. Maybe a MXT, GTP or XLT.

Thanks, Grayghost54

Both are good detectors, the new Whites Classic 5ID has a higher frequency than the older Classic ID detectors, same as the new Whites Prizm line of detectors and they comes with a 950 search coil. I think the the 8" coil for the Prizm series detector will work on the new 5ID and it would be a must for trashy parks, that is if the 8" Prizm coil works on the new 5ID detector, you may be stuck with the 950 coil only and that in itself would be a limiting factor with the Classic 5ID. I am a Whites guy myself but with that being said the Garrett Ace 250 on the other hand has the smaller coil choices available for it and may very well make it the better choice because of coil availability and the fact it is a little less costly than the 5ID and this would allow you to get the smaller coil with the Ace 250 for around the same cost or less than the 5ID.I feel the smaller accessory search coil is a must have for trashy park hunting as well as old houses with a lot of trash in the ground. Both detectors are fixed ground balance and perform well with the Garrett being lighter in weight

Good luck they are both good detectors.

Grayghost, I would go with the M6 or a CZ. I've hunted in New Mexico parks around the Kirtland AFB area in the mid 70's and understand your ground conditions. HH Ron

I'm a White's user for 30 years. The Ace 250 is an excellent machine, extremely light weight, easy to use, loaded and our fastest and best seller. In fact when I mentioned and showed it to my wife, who also is a White's user, she said was buy it for her. I did.

Here at Famous Treasures we have them on sale for $212.95.

Our number is 1-888-788-1819 should you be interested.

Hey Grayghost54, If I were going to limit my choices to only these two machines. I would choose the Ace 250. But, I would suggest finding a nice used unit like an XL Pro, CZ-5, M6 or an ID Edge or ID Excel. If your funds allow the MXT or XLT would also be excellent machines but, are going to run you several dollars more than the others.

Classic 5-ID. First, a few comments about the Garrett Ace 250. Right now, dollar-for-dollar, the Ace 250 is one of the better values out there, and they are very easy to use, and in favorable ground they work pretty well. But the operator doesn't have any control over the Ground Balance adjustment and, from experience with all of the Garrett models, many will face some challenges in more mineralized and/or iron-trash environments.

I like the Ace 250's 4-AA power supply, preferring AA's to 9V batteries. I like the easily accessed controls. Heck, I even like the color. But I am not pleased with the too-short upper 'S' rod that could use more length between the armcup and grip. Also, Garrett's audio can have an annoying little raspiness sort of thing in high quality headphones. I do like them, or I wouldn't have owned two of them, but I prefer the proven Classic performance.

The Classic 5-ID is based on the time-proven Classic ID circuitry with just a little front-end revision to change the operating frequency and change the coil connector jack. The Classic 4 and Classic 5-ID are specially made for Kellyco by White's, and they operate at about 8.1 kHz. They share the same coils as the White's Prizm series, which right now is only the 8" & 950. I do believe you can order the Classic 5-ID with the 8" rather than the 950, and personally I would do so.

I enjoyed the Classic 5-ID when I did an early-release review of it (review at http://www.kellycodetectors.com/Field%20Test%20Reports/WhiteClassic5ID.htm), and two of me good detecting friends have a Classic 5-ID in their arsenal because not only does it provide the great Classic performance in iron trash ghost tons and such, but that way Chris doesn't have an interference problem with Aundrea's Classic ID or XLT or my IDX Pro or Classic III SL.

Both are very good units, but my preference is the Classic 5-ID because I know how well it performs at the trashy sites I like to hunt.
