A quick story. A friend at work stopped me the other day and said that he heard I had a metal detector. I told him I had several. He asked if I could help him find his daughters class ring she lost the day prior in his back yard. He indicated they tried for hours on their hands and knees to find it, even raking the area. He said it has to be right in the grass and could not be under the ground. I said that would be a cinch. I can bring my detector into work and we can go a lunch time.
I had visions of bringing either my DFX or CZ6a. My friend said that I did not have to come over, just show him how to use the detector. I thought for a minute and stated that it would be easier if I just did it. Then it hit me.....instead of me using my high end units, let him use my sons Compadre !!
So I brought the Compadre into work, gave it to him and told him to turn it on, put the dial a little past nails and when he gets a solid hit in both directions ( I used a nickel to show him what it sounded like), reach down into the grass and it should be there.
Needless to say, when I got into work today, he was smiling...it took him about 5 minutes to find the ring. He said he had 2 hits prior to finding the ring. He was happy and bought me lunch.
Then he said "That was fun...where/how can I get a detector and what kind should I get ? "
My simple answer was look on the internet, but the one you should get is the same one you used to find the ring !! The Compadre is a really great, simple detector to get anyone into the hobby.
Tomorrow I will post finds from me and my 9 year old son's first relic hunt. He was using his Compadre and having a ball.
