Shoot I would have junked it too. Looked like a old bolt to me for a car or something ..LOL

Appears to be the inner portion of a USA Naval water tight paper time fuse---a very rare find.
Were you close to a waterway when you found it? Don't let anyone talk you out of it until you have determined its value.

im 40 miles from fort fisher and 2 1/2 miles inland so thats the mystery. my hunting partner said maybe the home owner fought at fort fisher and brought it back as a souvineir .dont know but its a big mystery, btw I dont sell my relics so no one is gonna get their hands on it.thanks for the info , it has an anchor on it and ord cant get the date from it.

Calabash you are tearing it up , save something for next year......LOL. I wouldn't have known what it was either. Being in Michigan , we don' t get much civil war finds. It's a good thing your buddy came along when he did. :)

Having an anchor proves that it is US Naval and being 2.5 miles inland is nothing. A 12 lb cannon with a 5 degree elevation will shoot flat for 1 mile--a big bore naval gun elevated will shoot for MILES. Some where around where you found this fuse you should find numerous lead balls since this was a paper time fuse canister shot. This munition was fired over the heads of opposing troops or fortifications and allowed to burst and scatter dozens of 69 caliber balls--these balls had more energy than a 45 colt--so they were deadly. You have a real adventure ahead of you--keep us informed.

I will keep yhall informed this was found right smack dab in the middle of the old house ruins, I will keep an eye out for the lead. I left a couple of big iron pieces in the ground maybe I need to dig them might be the shell itself. how big were these shells

The shells could be anywhere from 6" to 11" in diameter and weigh up to 100 lbs.So those big iron signals could be part of a shell.

VERY COOL! I wouldn't have looked at it twice, recycle!
