Civil War relics question

Guys Im new to detecting and have a question. Im hunting in a area that was fought over during the war. I have hunted for about four days. I am finding alot of round musket balls and buckshot. Yesterday I found 5 musket rounds 34 buckshot 9 percussion caps and a lead dice in about a 5' area. My question is why Im not finding anything but lead? Im running my 1st disc on iron. It picked up those small caps I was wondering why I havent found any brass or anything else? Im excited about the bullets but Im ready to find some other relics. Are hte buttons about corroded away after this length of time?
Thanks

My guess is that your coil simply hasn't gone over a button yet.
The buttons should still be able to to be detected with a good detector and if you are finding those tiny percussion caps, you should have no problem with buttons.
If there was action at that site, there were plenty of round balls lost or dropped in the heat of battle.. probably many more lost than buttons.
Just keep hitting it and more than likely, you'll eventually locate other relics.
Sounds like a very good site.. need some help LOL?
Good luck,
Felix

Yeah Felix Im excited about the spot. Its located at the end of a hardwood ridge that overlooks a pasture. Im sure its been hunted before. There's not a place around Corinth that hasnt been,I would just like to find some other items. Ive been using a Tesoro Tejon, but I also bought a Whites MXT that came in Fri. I bought a 10" DD coil would that work well in the woods?

I've been searching alot of sites lately that have been hunted before and the finds are still there.. just have to slow down and start digging some iffy signals as the loud obvioius signals are long gone.
I usually like to use a smaller coil when hunting in the woods to allow easier manuvering when searching and also for better separation when hunting around old house sites that are littered with nails.
The larger coil will be OK if the area is open and not too trashy, otherwise I would stick with the stock coil ( which sounds like you are doing good with based on the finds you have made ) or go with the 5.75".
I have not used the Tejon, but have read that it is very capable of finding brass and lead in great depths.
I have a Vaquero and it does very good when used around old home sites.. and very light!!
Goodluck and look forward to seeing your future finds from this site.
Felix

When I first started hunting CW relics I would generally roam a battle field. Back then relics were plentiful and easy to find. To be successful today requires a lot more planing. When I go into the wood today I always carry a can of orange spray paint. I mark a tree and go about 50ft. and mark a second tree. I repeat this until I have marked off an area 50 ft. square. I then divide this area into 4ft. lanes and
do complete grid search. You will be surprised how effective this type of search is. Good luck TomB
