Civil War Relic Hunting

My F75 arrives today. I will relic hunt with it down here in north Louisiana Friday. How do you relic hunters like to set it up? Any other tips?

Thanks.

Je mode
Sens- 80+ (if its stable enough)
2+ tones (low for iron high for everything else)
notch 1
disc 10-19 depending on the site

I usually run in all metal mode, JE , 2 tones, 2 numbers higher on ground balance than the fast grab reads, freq. F7. sens as high as it will run stable ( here it is at about 84 to 92 ) . This setting works well for me here in East Tennessee but yours could be totally different.
When Relic hunting I usually dig all positive display numbers above 10, This makes for alot of work but does pay off for me in the long run. The 2 tones gives me a real good idea on seperating iron from lead and brass. Minies usually come in the area of 50 to 64, my hunt areas have different types of soil and mineralization plus bullet sizes factors in at those readings also. 58 to 69 calibers usually come in at 56 to 62. What I've found funy is that a modern 22 bullet reads at 22 9 times out of 10 here. Round balls, according to size read up the scale from the 20's to the upper 50's. Running in all metal also cuts down on the chatter you can get when running in discriminate mode. Good luck with the F75, and don't be afraid to work on the settings, it may take a bit to get used to it and dial it in but it is an amazing machine when properly set up. I hope this helps...Jim

Jigflipper, which all metal mode are you talking about? Static or motion. I wasn't aware that you could get the two tone option in the all metal mode. Or are you just turning the disc down to zero in the disc mode? Thanks for the help and please excuse my ignorance.

I have been using F-75 for 8 months at a relic site I have to hunt that is full of iron. The set-up I was told to use for maximum unmasking in high iron is de or pf mode, sens up to 99 if area permits and monotone, discrim 6. Dig the most repeatable monotone. Any time you use more than one tone on the machine the discrim goes to 15 even though you have it set on a lower number. I have recovered over 1000 buttons, suspender buckles clasps and fasteners using this set up. I mainly go by tone then look at TID. You can see it bouncing from low to high....there will be iron in hole close to the good target many times. The sunray probe is very helpfull in quickly locating the items in the hole you have dug. I often find multiple targets with it once I have the hole opened up.

I was wondering that myself. In all metal mode you lose the process options. Seperate menu (& circuits, I would have to believe).

if your hunting really old relic sites.......you need to keep your disc at no higher than 6. You need to hear those nails and debris as your coming up on them. also...............if you have your disc set at 10...and you go over a non ferrous target thats under a nail and the nail reads 8 and is subesuquently knocked out because your discs set at 10....then you will lose the target UNDER the nail as well. when I'm trying to sanitize a well hunted area......................its disc no higher than "6".............and monotone. you'll be suprised at what you have missed.............. :)

thanks folks I have a huge relic hunt I'll be doing soon and I will try this also...james

The F75 has a "low gain" setting when disc is between 5 and 20. You can test this by cranging your sens to the point the machine is chattering, then lower your disc to a setting between 5 and 20 and the machine will quiet down. Instead of setting it at 6, run your discs down to 4 or below and you will be back in the "high gain" area and the machine is hotter. Give it try.

As a relic hunter, I usually hunt in all metal.....(not static) GB first, run the sensitivity up as far as I can with minimum chatter..... dig everything over 10... Especially is AM helpful when you in areas
where the coil can not be swung good because of brush, trees, weeds, etc...
In Disc. --GB first, Disc at 1, Tone ID at 3, (CW targets usually fall in the middle category) Sens. as high as possible without chatter.....Here is an area that you need to be careful, pushing the sensitivity to where the machine is noisy can mask a good target.... (target response lost in chatter) The lower you run the dis., the more depth that you get...we're talking about an inch or less here, but where I hunt, a 1/2 inch can mean the difference in finding a target and walking over it...
Too, Fisher suggest moving the coil relatively fast, slowing down to an average speed will enhance the depth and give the processor time to "read" the info from the coil, especially on deep targets.. Best to all, Richard

if you run it in Je..............there Is no sens boost............................. your already in it!!!

Run in Je mode 1 tone Sensitivity as high as I can with out to much chatter 65 to 99 somtimes. Discrim at 5.
Seems to do better in the 1 tone mode for me. Need to try all metal more but for know this is what i use.

I use the JE mode if I know my targets are deep and there is no outside electrical interference... Where we hunt most of the time, there is a very high tower that has all kinds of repeaters on it.....
I hunted a CW era house with White's machines a number of times back in the 80's and 90's, I took the F-75 there and in the default mode, the ground came alive. I got a number of good coins and pretty well had cleaned out about a 20 X 20 section of the yard UNTIL I changed over to the JE mode... The targets were so plentiful in that section that I had just worked, it was as if I hadn't touched it.... Had to leave because homeowner was mowing the yard and haven't been back but, I agree, JE mode is awesome. NOW in the JE mode, set your freq. to 6-7 and start again.... unreal to say the least...Best to you.... Richard

That's interesting, Heath, the MXT will do the same thing.... the ID info seems to be more dependable at the depth where the electronics start "guessing". On the MXT, I ran discrimination at 1, almost all audio was good but the jumping ID, probably 50% of the time gave good targets... check this out....http://hobby.us.whiteselectronics.com/component/option,com_story/task0,month_200410/Itemid,137/

best to you, Richard

Richard so you seen a difference when you uped the freq to 7 interesting..which tone did you use in JE mode..Thanks..james

While 2 tones work good, ferrous and non-ferrous, I like 3 because it basically lets me know ahead of time that a middle tone is a good target (relic hunting).Love that sound..... I like to it if I occasionally hunt coins. Sometimes I go to 3H.. best to you, Richard
