Civil War Projectile Hunting

TomB

New member
In the recent past, I have been hunting the battle field site of the Battle of Cloyd Mountain, in southwest Va. This is a very heavily hunted area and relics such a bullets are becoming difficult to find. Prayer to the actual battle a 3 1/2 hr artillery engagement took place. In the near future I intend to hunt for the projectiles from this engagement.

My question is what type of target signal will I get on my X-70 when I pass over a Reed-Parrot type projectile that is 2.85" in diameter, 8 5/8" in length and weighing 10 pounds+. I would assume that the signal would be in the -6 to -8 range.

I will be using 10.5 DD 7.5KHz coil in the all medal mode. Thanks, TomB

With over 1 1/2 years experience with X-70 under my belt to say, most large Iron targets such horseshoes ,flat Iron, and plow parts with Give you An Positive I.D. number and high tone { I only Hunt 2 Tones Only}across the board and even. I dug about 1/2 dozen Shells over the years , my advice to don't miss any Shells would hunt Prosp. Mode , and dig anything, since Its chance that your site may It been hunted before or Deep targets ect.. I dug Shells from only just single 12 inches deep to my deepest over 4 feet in sandy soil. You just hunt slow and dig lots junk to Finds Shells there no easy way around it.!!

I dug a baby Hotchkiss at two feet with the 70. It gave a good signal, but it was an iron signal. Something closer to the surface will give a positive number though. Like Reconmarine says, you gotta dig everything to find shells. In your site I'm sure many could have been walked over by detectorists thinking they were scrap iron or nails. Good luck.

a nice high tone and VDI something like 42 or in the forties if you are hunting in all metal mode. Deep iron ox shoes hit around there for me. HH, Mike
