Civil War flag

I recently acquired this flag and would like some help with it’s history. It is hand made and is for the 2nd. infantry of North Carolina. Listed on the white and blue panels are the different battles. Thanks for your help. Sorry, but I am unable to load a picture. I don’t know how to reduce my picture.

Most of the early regiments were issued these flags. Even after they were issued the famous (or infamous ) CS battle flags they would still carry the original also. Many were sent back to the governor's office after being so damaged in battle they couldn't be used.
Is this a reproduction?

The story that I “bought” is that the sellers Grandfather obtained it in the 1970’s and kept it until his death. The grandfather passed it to his grandson and then it came to me. The Grandfather obtained many items from the Civil War era. The flag does not illuminate under a black light! The flag is a beautiful example as it sits. I have not found info showing if it was a Union or a Confederate flag. I think the best clues are the battles listed on the flag itself.

Very interesting. I think you have something there ! You may want to have an "expert" check it out and see if he can give you more insight on it. The time line, story and description all sound good. Also---, it looks to be period; especially with the hand sewn stitching. There were many variations of Conf. battle flags prior to the more commonly known Rebel flag. Keep us posted. CCH

I wanted to let everyone know that I now believe this flag is indeed a reproduction. I have been convinced that it is a (Bristol) reproduction. Thanks to everyone for your interest and help.

What led you to the conclusion that its a repo ? CCH

I messaged with many people and was made aware of some men that made many reproduction civil war flags around Bristol, Tn. When I checked out that story and applied common sense, I came to my conclusion. Part of the common sense is: People (mostly women that were excellent seamstresses) that would have made original flags did so with a high degree of skill. Repairs could be something else. My flag has no repairs. The stitches were much to crude to be original. The people that did the reproductions, did so with very old cloth to be deceptive. Anyway, common sense won out.

Oh well .... I'm sure all of us here on the site were hoping that it could be authenticated as an original. I agree that there are LOTS of CW repo remakes for everything period. Thanks for the detailed information sharing and taking us along.

Best wishes ... CCH
