Civil War era US Cavalry Relic!

Dug this today near a creek. It was only about three inches down stuck between two roots. I think it is a Civil War era US Cavalry bridle rosette. There was a fort near here, think Custer, Dances with wolves that sort of thing. I have never found anything like this before and figured some of you relic folks might be able to help me out with any additional info. I love finding things like this that are parts of history. Possibly my best MD find so far. The quarter is just for scale. Thanks in advance for any info on this!

Sorry no info but I will say that that's an insane find ! Nice work.

JC, I see you are from the Montana area. How far was this site from the Little Big Horn battle field? US military continued to use a lot of surplus equipment from the Civil War era in the Indian plains wars during the 1870's. Some of that equipment was used by Custer at the Little Big Horn. After the battle, the US abandoned what they didn't need, and a lot was looted by the Indains after the fight. You may be on to a stash site from either Indians or the US. Any relics found that could be linked to the Little Big battle would certainly be collector items. Look for any 45/55 or 45/70 shell casings with NO markings on the base of the shell except a firing pin strike, that would put them in the same time era as the battle. As far as your find, I don't know for sure, but I do not think it is off a horse bridle. Most of the bridle relics I have seen were just regular bridle rings. Judging from the ears on the relic, it looks like it was attached to some kind of box or container. Just my dos centavos. Good luck with your hunt. Txquest

Thanks for the info and pics guys! I am quite a ways from Custer's stand, but have another old fort that was quite active very nearby. Maybe they stopped to let the horses drink from the creek, who knows.

Did you hear me say, "WOW"? My goodness, that's one heck of a nice find. It sure is an eye opener. Thanks for posting and for the picture! :surprised: HH, Nancy

Way To go!!!! You and I both know how hard it is to find anything civil war related in Montana, I have only found 2 things. Congrats!:clapping:

I had to come back and look at that beauty again. I'd give a shiny silver dollar to find one of those. Fantastic find! HH, Nancy
