Ok, We were out this morning, at a place that was known inhabited back in 1880's to 1935ish,didn't find any coins, but did find this....now, I can't make out any manufacturers markings, except the U.S.A. on the back. The piece looks to be some kind of guilded copper, looks like a Union piece of some kind, measures 3/4" across at the bottom of the cape, IF....it was starightened out, it would measure 2-3/4" tall, but it looks like it was in a fire and has been bent right at the soldier's knees. No places showing any type of pin mounting, no clasps, could it have been on top of something, come on guys give me a shove in the right direction, Jack.

:confused:Can't answer your question; but maybe the folks at The Relic Hunting Forum can.

Neat find, though.

Dunno...The U.S.A. has a turn of the century "look"
to it though... Would they use the full USA in the
civil war? Not sure... Good find whatever it is.

`I want to thank every one for your input, I am really stumped on this, I know it isn't Civil War era, maybe a commemorative piece of some kind, but it doesn't have any indication to this as far as a date. I thought about the chess piece teory too, but why would it have U.S.A. without a manufacturer's mark or most likely would identify Union vs. Confederate soldier...so i guess I'll just hold on to it until by the same fluke of discovery, I come upon someone who can ID it. Thanks All and Good Huntin" ... Jack.
