Detectorists? How many archies do you see standing in front of a bulldozer digging out a percussion cap? Or, heck, for that matter, Washington's uniform?
When the only battlefields we can visit are the paved parking lots behind the small historical marker and the billboard Wal-Mart sign, we will have been the vast majority of the effort to have preserved anything.
I ask anyone to compare the number of reference books created, researched, and paid for with the writer's own money as opposed to the number produced by the archaeologists who used yours and my money.
Developers are in another category. But at least they're up front about being greedy.
Didn't mean to rant so. And I'm NOT fussing at anyone here. I simply have the utmost respect for the men and women who brave elements, (in these days) finances, God's animals and using their own (what a novel idea!) resources preserve our past, one mangled minie or percussion cap at a time.
