Cibola Question

Hi all, I aquired a Fisher CZ-6a from my brother in law, it is a real good machine (detects deep) in real good shape but is alot heavier than I am used to. I was offered a decent trade in value for it from different dealers ($350.00) I am either going to keep it and try and get used to the weight of it or trade it in for a Tesoro Cibola. I am reviewing the Cibola as much as posible and it seems to be an impressive machine. One review about pinpointing I don't understand though - here is a copy & paste of the review (This Cibola really doesn't have glaring bad points, only a few minor weaknesses (and I emphasize the word MINOR.) It pinpoints well but I find I'm much more confident with the pin-pointing system on my Excel. On the Cibola, frequency increases as you close in on the target and then the sound disappears when you have centered the target. Often I wonder if I passed over the target when the sound vanishes)end quote.Got the review from here http://metaldetectorreviews.net/detectors/39-1-tesorocibola.html. I would think that the sound would increase as you pinpoint the target and it shouldn't disappear when you are directly over it. Would really like opinions from you's that actually use the Cibola. Thanks! Steve.

The Cibola pinpoints so dead on in disc mode without using the PP button. it's an un-neccessary step. sweep, dig. Dead center everytime

Thanks Jeff, but I am still wondering - does the sound get louder when you pinpoint the target or does the sound disappear when you are directly over the target in pinpoint mode. Also what's your opinion of the Cibola compared to the Fisher CZ-6 (same as CZ-5 basically) hunting for coins in the school yards, parks, tot lots, etc. I never beach hunt. Thanks! Steve. (upstate New York).

I have never used those Fisher models so I cannot say. I find on the pp button. When you hold it in and move the coil the loudest or highest sound is over the target. But it takes a while to get your head around it. It's just different. Like I said in regular hunting it is always right under the center of the coil wiout the PP button. I decided to try the Cibola as I wanted get back to a more down to earth metal detecting without all the gadgets. Not that I don't like them I just wanted to get back to my roots I guess. The Cibola was a very plesant surprise. Really great performance.

My pinpoint doesn't intensify it goes silent. I still have not figured out how to use it! Not at all like my Spectrum.
My pinpoint doesn't intensify it goes silent. I still have not figured out how to use it! Not at all like my Spectrum.
That's what I have read somewhere, but it don't make any sense why it would go silent when you have coil dead center over the target in pinpoint mode. The last Tesoro I had was a Silver uMax & it didn't have a pinpoint button on it. All other units I have had Fisher/White's/Garrett/ when you pinpointed the target the sound always got louder when directly over the object. Steve.

While I havent used the Cibola, every other Tesoro I've used pinpoints right on the money, just by Xing a target. I think the key is in the smaller receiver coil.

I think the key is the fast retune speed. The older models had a very slow retune speed that allowed you to slowly pinpoint the target. The newer models start retuning very quickly, and will null out before you think it should.

I think that I know what you may be talking about. Does it null out and then the pitch returns after the target? I little more of a description. Does the pitch drop as you approach the null point or does the pitch increase and then suddenly stop.

If the pitch is dropping as you approach the target try turning your threshold and/or sensitivity down a bit. I have had a cibola do that for me and I fixed it by reducing the threshold. PP button doesn't work in supertune mode very well......

You have to be off to the side of the target when you press "pinpoint" and then mover your coil over the target. If you press pinpoint on the target you de-tune the machine, virtually nulling out the target.

If you go slow, the Cibola pinpoint pitch will increase and then nulls over the target. At this point just to confirm that I am on target, I just bob the coil up and down a little.

I have also found mine to be so accurate that just x-ing is enough. The times I have used the pinpoint I find it more confusing than helpful. It is much easier to x and dig and move on!!!!

First off, the Cib, or any other Tesoro, is NOT a Fisher. The response suite is vastly different and it is an apples vs oranges thing to try and make more than general comparisons.

The Cib has a fast retune speed in All Metal, which accounts for the disappearing signal during pinpointing... the old "hover speed" non-motion stuff is gone. You can change this, but it is an internal adjustment and best done by trained folks. Others have said that pinpointing in DISC mode is the way to go. I agree.

If it were me, I wouldnt dispose of the Fisher so readily. Work with it. Get to know it. It's rugged and works well. I know this is a Tesoro group, but I consider it wise to NOT slam other detectors - all have their strong points. I liked all the Fishers I've owned.

I also like the Tesoro's. I have a Vaq now and I don't think you can go wrong with a Cib - if it suits your style. If you dont care about ID features or some of the other "controls" the Fisher has, you will do fine with it.It is dead easy to use and is so light you wonder sometimes if is even there.

In closing I say this: Own them both. Set your sights on this and make it happen. Each is different, for equally different reasons. Having both will open posiibilites you wont have if you make an "either/or" choice.
