Cibola Question

I know a couple that just bought a new Cibola, and I have been doing what I can to help them get the hang of detecting, without overloading them with things but letting them work their own way into doing things however it is fitting to them. In helping with the Cibola, I have become a bit confused myself and may even be confusing them and that is not what I intended. From what I have read and understand , the Cibola, like the Tejon, and The Vac, and all the UMaxs' will chatter when cranked so far in to the Sens/Max Boost.Have so far not been able to get the first chirp from the Cibola, and only with the Threshold cranked into a moderate supertune will it make any chatter(not chirping) in iron. Not having access to the machine enough to really get familuar with it, I have a problem being able to give them any reliable advice as to whether things are as they should be the way the Cibola is performing, or if truth be we are not setting it up correctly. I have been using a Tejon for several years and have a closet full of Umax's and they all let you know when the sens is high enough. Is the Cibola suppose to be that quiet, and can it be set to pick up nails? I set the Disc, all the way down as low as it will go and it will not pick up a cut nail. I know that is standard for some machines but did not expect it of the Cibola.Overall it seems to be ok and appears to be working just fine.

Are they using headphones with an adapter plug on their Cibola? I had big problems running an adapter plug on my old headphones--you have to pull the adapter plug out about 1/8" from the Cibola port in order to get any sound out.

Otherwise here are my usual Cib settings. Threshold to 1-2 o'clock, Disc to the line above iron (9:30 on a clockface), Sens to somewhere between 7-9 depending on where I am hunting. If I want to go deeper, I crank the threshold all the way right, and Sens to slightly less than Max, as that tends to eliminate falsing for me. I run the stock 9x8 coil, and I have done no mods to the machine.

Also, did they buy new or used? You might want to check to make sure the coil they have is really a Cibola coil (4-pin) if they bought used. Just a thought...

Location, location, location. There are a number of areas I hunt where the ground is mild enough I can run full/max sensitivity without chatter. This is assuming everything is working as it should, otherwise.

Amazon, from what I was told, and do not want to use headphones. They are well trained and much experienced amateur Archeoligst which in truth gives them a natural aversion to metal detectors. They are trying to overcome it though and I am trying to help . They have not caught on yet to the advantages of headphones ( which I advised) but that change will take place as they are already wondering why their first battery only lasted a very few hrs.As for the Cibola,My biggest concern was the fact that I was not able at any setting , with or without my headphones (KOSS TD 81'S) to get the first chirp out of the Cibola with the Sens maxed out, before or after the coil ever hit the ground. I know that the T, V, and C are all supposed to be the same basic machine, so I just expected some of the same basic functions to take place. When it didn't, and I was trying to explain things to them, I had to admit to them that something was either not right with their machine, or that I didn't know what I was talking about. All of which was not giving them any incourgement for their new bought tool for their main hobby. I had read some posts somewhere that the Cibola had a bit different setup on the mode change process(Disc/Iron) and thought that is probably where I am not understanding the machine. As for ground minerals here , there is little or no problem and the Cibola should be a real winner for them, but we sure need to make sure the it is doing what it is supposed to do, and not need to head for the shop already. Thanks ! Charlie

I think I would air test with some of Sven's settings and targets. In mild ground I can run very close to max sensitivity and not chatter, but right at max, I normally get some chatter. With disc set all the way down, I'd expect from a click to broken beep on a cut nail.

It may need a trip home for a check out.

Sven's page with link to Cibola air tests

Good luck!

suggested and try Sven's settings next time I hunt with my friends . I have a feeling the Cibola is probably just fine and with a little more use we will be able to get everything squared away with it so we can all be comfortable knowing it is doing it's job just fine. I know well that it always takes time to get the feeling for a new machine and learn the new scheme of things. And it always helps too, to have some good input from you guys! Thanks again! Charlie

You might suggest they invest in some 9v rechargeable NiMh batteries (www.batteryjunction.com is a good source). I just started running my Cib on one and it works fine. Good/better battery life it seems to me too. I got 4, and keep two new and unused. The other two are running in the Cib, one in the box, and one on my belt for back up.

idea if they are going to continue to not use phones. The proper settings will help ,but with no phones they will need all the extra Battery life they can muster.! Thanks again!

and search for Cibola Metal Detector. I good place to look if you want video information regarding any metal detector.
You may find instructional set up videos there.

That is great! I have one of their cheapest (single volume knob) sets and the dual volume set too best headphones out there i believe.
