Cibola Mod?

I have seen where people modify their Cibola by adding a Ground balance I know it voids the warranty but how much would it cost to have this done. Is it cost effective if you have a Cibola already or would it be best to just sell the Cibola and buy a Vaquero?

It took me a few hours... The actual soldering etc is easy enough, but the holes have to be fitted with washers... I made washers out if plastic.
I really took my time.

The parts will run you around $35 shipped if you buy new.

Once modded it's not like a vaquero. It's close enough, but the vaquero is quieter... The cibola will have more info in it's tone... I can't explain why, but I noticed it right away.
I did some air tests and my modded cibola was deeper than my new vaquero with both small and stock coil.

It's possible it was deeper before.... Just an air test ... Fir whatever that's worth.. May be different in the ground

My opinion is if you can do it yourself you'll have everything you want from a vaquero and more. If it's going to cost the same as buying a vaquero than just buy the vaquero. The 3 3/4 pot on the vaq isn't as precise, buts it's good enough.

I've read there's other plusses to the modded cibola too.... Try searching for Sven modded cibola in google

You can contact Keith Southern, usually find him on the Teknetics or Fisher forum now.
He will do it, I would do it in the past but, I now live up in Canada, between shipping costs
to and from me about $60.00US plus parts and labor, it's not a good deal.

Yes voids warranty but, Tesoros almost last forever anyways and generally do not need service.
Resale of a mod'd Cibola will still be as high as a used Cibola and then some will pay extra with the mod.

Those who have a V as well as a mod'd C, will tell you depth is the same or maybe better and the mod'd C
just plain is smoother and hunts better.

If your handy, you can do the mod yourself, it doesn't cost much, just have to be careful. Contact Keith S.,
you'll get it done right.

You can always adjust the GB using the trimmer pot inside the box on the PC board, that will not void warranty.
But consider it a course adjustment. An external GB 10 turn pot will get you precise tuning as well as custom tune
the GB to which size coil you switch back and forth from. You'll be able to tune out hotrocks with precision if you live in
hot rock country.

I would say add up the cost to have the C mod'd , then see if your better off selling the C and using the mod money
and apply it towards a used Tejon. Richard at Backwood's Detectors does get some deals in and may be willing to take the
C in trade towards one. Worth a look.

If you want the mod, you can download it off my website, this is the direct link to my download at Rapidshare:

Not saying its right or wrong, but if you decide to sell it, a modified machine DOES deter some people from ever buying it. I would never buy a Tesoro that has been modified, if anything goes wrong with it (even if its not the part that was modified), Tesoro wont touch it. You could be stuck with a dead duck. Just be aware of the risks. One of the biggest advantages of owning a Tesoro is the life time warranty.

Unless you know who did the mod. It's like that with any mod'd device.

I would hesitate on buying a mod'd unit myself if I didn't know
if the person was mod'ing was competent, paid attention to detail and used quality parts. Tesoros have little room
inside the housing to work with, you have to be careful not to damage anything. I wouldn't want a machine
worked on by Mr. Two Left Hands or his brothers Mr. Clutsy Hands and Mr. Rush In Hands.

So far every mod'd C that has come up for sale sold close or more than a stock C. Most of the guys here who mod'd
their unit have worked in the electronics field or electronics is a hobby.

I don't recommend modding a unit unless you are planning on keeping it for the long haul. Or have nothing better to
do and willing to accept that you may end up with a worthless machine if you mess up.

There is another site Geotech, that caters to those of us who like to tinker, experiment and build metal detectors.
Tesoros designs are very popular to build. As well as many other machines. See Bandido and HammerheadPI pictures below

I almost bought a Cibola mod and a Sovereign mod but then i did not i guess if any detector has mods in it i will stay away from it..........................

I have enjoyed tinkering with electronics since I was old enough to tear things apart (and put them back together). I wouldn't hesitate for a minute buying a mod'ed detector or anything else as long as it was done right. I am using a mod'ed Tesoro Siver Sabre
