Cibola Mod. Question

I want to add a manual ground balance to my Cibola that I am getting. Was wondering if anyone has an extra Bournes 50K ohms (Mouser part no. 652-3540S-1-503L) pot. they would part with or know where to order one. Thanks! Steve.

Done some searching and found what I was looking for. Thanks! Steve.

Steve,

FWIW (and for posterity) you don't *need* a 10 turn pot, it just allows you a larger adjustment margin. When you compare a single turn to a ten turn, the ten turn basically turns what would be 1 clock position on the single turn pot into and entire rotation on the ten turn. It's really more of a mechanical luxory than a circuit benifit. Say your working with the single turn, and you find your threshold. But that threshold is a fine line, a single twitch and it's set off one way or another. It's literally a crack in the adjustment scale. The ten turn will turn that crack into an entire rotation in size for your to tune in. Single turn pots are cheaper so if you can live with that you save $$

Secondly, that 2 watt units is WAY oversized for it's job. The onboard isn't but a mere 1/4 watt unit. Someone probably chose this because it turned up in a 'panel mount' style. So you can shop around for a smaller wattage pot and save some $$ there too.

Third, Bourns is not your only option. It's also not the cheapest. But they do make one hell of a trimpot!

Thanks Matt, sending you a pm. Been thinking it over and and have come up with 2 things -

1. The Cibola I am getting is brand new from a dealer so any mod. will void th warranty of course. So I will first try out the Cibola on my ground and if it works well fine leave well enough alone. If it needs adjusting I can easily adjust the internal ground pot. one way or another.

2. Get the parts and do the mod. as soon as I get the Cibola, and tell myself there it is done and over with.

I am not real sure how much my ground changes where I hunt & how much (if any) I will benefit from the g.b. mod. But I do really like the idea of the doing the pinpoint/all metal mod. to change it like on the Tejon. Steve.

Back in the day when I installed/repaired C-Band (big dish) satellite systems I worked with pot.s in the actuators (the thing that moved the dish). They changed from using pots. to a reed switch as a sensor in the actuator. It has been many many years since I have worked on the big dish systems & am alittle rusty remembering whats what. I numbered the pot. in the picture 1 2 & 3 am I correct the way I numbered them. Thanks! Steve.

I'm a tweaker, so I would go with option 2 myself. But you may find option 1 more suitable to your needs. Hell that thing may be just fine right out of the box. I'm just the kind of guy who wants a big honkin knob there if I ever have to adjust it. I would say take it for a few swings first.

This is the OEM part for the Cortes panel mount pot. http://www.bourns.com/data/global/pdfs/385126.pdf

When you look for substitutes you obviousley keep the value the same, BUT there is one more tidbit to mention there. The second to last Alphanumeric in the part number determines it's 'taper style' and this pot is 'linear' NOT 'audio'.

So you need a 50k panel mount (bushing mount, solder lug, etc you can search all these terms.) with a Linear taper. Be careful where you decide to mount it! There are some through hole parts on the main PCB that might not allow the clearance. I seen your PM, but just don't have the time at the moment to go sourcing for you. If that changes I'll post something. You did lable that picture correctly. Good luck.

Thanks Matt. Steve.

I think that I was wrong numbering the pot. in the picture above. I beleive this is correct????

Steve,

There is an etching right there on the side of the part. Unless you have some reason to believe the number sequence is physically different, in which case I woul dpolitely refer you to download the datasheet on the part in question. It's full of all sorts of useful and equally useless information ;)

Heck Tesoro has the best warranty in business...so keep in mind when modding as Tesoro won't repair a modded unit I was told...Your call...

Good point Dan. I don't think that I will monkey with the Cibola, just wanted to touch base if some time down the road I decide to though. Steve.

The difference between the single turn pot on the inside and a 10 turn external pot on the outside turns the Cibola into a new machine.
The fine tune adjustment is for the perfectionist, it dials in the GB right on the money. I can easily tune out hot rocks or make them crack.
Anyone who has Mod'd the Cibola will let you know the improved performance.
