Cibola GB Mod

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
I just got done with doing it and posted on the Modification forum if anyone is interested. That makes the Cibola a very sweet machine........

The 10 turn GB allows for a perfect GB every time you hunt to get maximum depth. The locking All Metal on the trigger makes it a snap to hunt in AM and just tap the trigger for discrimination mode (center) for target ID and then squeeze again to pinpoint and separate multiple targets and dig.......... SWEET..............

You are absolutely right about the GB mod making the Cibola a very sweet machine. I have the mod on my Cibola and couldn't be happier with it. Before the mod I couldn't hit the dime at 7 inches and the quarter at 9 inches in my test garden. After the mod, I hit on both with no problem. My Cibola's factory GB was set too positive for the soil conditions in my area. Be sure to do Monte's power balancing technique when MD'ing in the silent search discriminate mode. Monte describes his technique on this forum. It works extremely well.

Yep, power balance adds another inch to the depth.

Larry, that's very interesting.---What advantage(s) are you seeing in having the Cibola g.b. mod over the Vaquero?------Do you think the mod makes the C a better/hotter machine than the V?---------Del

I pretty much cover that on the Mod forum but the 10 turn GB Pot is a lot more precise than the 3 3/4 on the V. The big advantage to me is the pinpoint thumb button goes to a three way fingertip switch like White's. Lock forward is All Metal, center is Disc and trigger squeezed is pinpoint, (spring loaded all metal) Really not that big of a deal unless you like to tinker.

Ditto here.
Even with the 10 turn, it only takes a little touch to make a difference.
Really helps on beach hunting.

Any one know were I can find the Silver Sabre Mod info listed at the bottom page of the {Tesoro Cibola ground balance mod} Thanks Jay

You will probably have to get a hold of the author of the article, Sven Stau. I don't have any other information, sorry.

I don't have my mod info anymore.
From memory:
Basically adding a 10 turn GB pot, some toggle switches on being used asa selector switch for the two disc modes. flip the toggle the toggle one way it switches to disc 1 pot, then if toggled the opposite way switches disc to disc 2 pot. Disc/all metal toggle was attached to the pinpoint button

I was going to start a new post on this subject, but since it's already here, I'll use this one.

I'm having trouble imagining how many people who own a Cibola, have really experienced how sweet they can run in hot soil with the right GB touch.
How could a tech get the GB just right, at the factory, using test soil??? ESPECIALLY with the adjustment resolution ability of the internal trimpot being roughly 100 times less than the 10 turn??
1/16th turn of the 10 turn dial can mean silence or chatter in my soil. Can't imagine getting that internal pot just right, every time, especially when you go to a rare area that needs 1/4 turn OR MORE!

ARE THERE ANY TESORO REPS READING THESE POSTS???

Why would Tesoro help you to void your warranty ? That would be odd. This would make the cheaper cibola just like a vaquero or better depending where you like the buttons.

They then would have no need to sell the vaquero ? I'm not against modding my self , and it would be easy for me to do. But I'm just guessing what Tesoro would say to this. But I could be wrong?

Mike

Good points by both of you Polewagger and Mike. I think many would benefit with the 10 turn GB and I really like the trigger pinpoint, both possible factory upgrades to the Vaquero, not the Cibola. I also would not recommend the mod if you are worried about the warranty, especially if the Tesoro is your primary detector. I did the mod on my Cibola because it is my fun detector and I bought it used so I didn't have a lot into it to start with. The first thing I did when I got my Cibola is fine tune the internal GB for my ground and that made a big difference from the git go but now that I have the external GB I know that I will have the perfect GB every time and I can set it slightly positive if I want to.

The Cibola has it's market and for the guy/gal who wants a good simple detector for the jewelry and most coins, the Cibola is hard to beat. For the more serious hunter, the Vaquero or modded Cibola is the ticket for a more depth especially in mineralized ground.

Yeah if I had a used one I may dive into that too...:coastgaurd:

I know this is an old thread and this is my first post. I just scored a used Cibola off ebay and ordered the parts for this mod. Can anyone who has done the mod tell me where to set the GB? Should I set it neutral or slightly positive or negative for the greatest depth. I will be using it with the new RSD double-d coil. I also have a Sidewinder Micromax and Tigershark. I usually set the GB on the Tigershark to neutral. Thanks,

Tony

Slightly negative in disc mode, with a 10 turn that might be a quarter turn.

Sven, I'm going to be gb modding my Cibola, I understand everything but the switch, green to 1 yellow to 3 nothing to 2? I'm trying to understand how to wire the three way toggle.

Or is it better to just use the 2way so it's pinpoint forward and disc back? Either way how do I wire the switch?

Easiest way to describe it.

Orig. push button pinpoint is just an on off switch, when "off" its in disc mode, when pushed in and held its in "on" position and now in all metal mode.

If your using a 3 way switch, with a spring back to center from one direction, center toggle position is normal position.

All you do is jump the solder tab 1 and 3 together
Center pin--------green
Other two pins----yellow

Pinpoint pull toggle lever backwards spring back to center when released--green wire makes momentarily contact with yellow wire (on position)
Push toggle forward and lock in position for all metal mode----green wire makes contact with yellow wire (on position)
Center normal locked position for disc mode, green wire makes no contact with with yellow (off position)
