The first part in italics is what I thought in November.
<EM>I read the manual and tried a set up for maximum depth. Gain wide open, threshold wide open. Disc all the way down. Sounded like a telegraph going off in my head so I backed it down to where I could get a comfortable air test with very little falsing. Gain wide open, threshold at about the one o'clock position, disc all the way down. (I should say that I did try to air test targets at threshold wide open and it was very, very deep. I did no measurements because I knew that there was no way that I could hunt with this setting.) This machine is one of the most threshold to depth ratio based detectors I have ever used. For instance, I lost 7 inches on an Eagle I button just by moving the threshold from the one o'clock position to all the way counter clockwise. Definitely keep an eye on your threshold knob when hunting.
Here's what I got when all signals were repeatable (with headphones).
Modern quarter 10.5"
Barber half dollar 12"
.54 minie 12"
Eagle I button 12" (dropped to 5" when I turned the threshold down)
Eagle breast plate 17"

Now I don't get to detect as often as I would like but I can tell you what I think of the Cibola now after hitting the dirt with it a few times. After my air test above I have since found that I can comfortably hunt with max gain and the threshold pointing at the 2 o'clock position - which does add a little more depth. I have also discovered that, in my ground, the fixed ground balance has yet to go negative on me. With a perfectly set up gb on other machines I used, I would have to constantly readjust the gb for my ever changing ground - so with my Tejon, I have to set it quite a bit on the positive side to compensate for my difficult dirt. I dug minies anywhere from 5 to 10 inches in some pretty rough soil with the Cibola and, for a factory set ground balance, I'd say that is pretty good. I can squeeze a little more out of my Tejon with a positive gb but for a $320 detector the Cibola is about as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned.
