CIBOLA - enhanched power system -

Nice. The batteries behind the handle ought to be about the right weight to help balance the 12 x 10 coil too!

Hi TVR,
Yes, I have my 12x10 DD always on and this system makes a better balanced detector.
6 AA batteries last longer than 1 9v PP3.
Many times I found my Cibola erratic and discovered that my new PP3 was exhausted (just one beep on metal startup).
I wonder what I've lost behind before discovering it, so I decided to make the mod.
It will not go deeper, but it will go deep longer.
Take r.

Very nice job!!

Why would you want to make a lite weight detector heavier? I would reather carry a spare 9 volt in my pocket.

As I explained in my last message I discovered that sometimes I hunted with an exhausted battery for more than an hour before discovering that was not the high mineralised ground but low power to make my baby erratic.

It's not so heavy (just have a run with an old 5900...:) ) and it has a better balance too. I think that balance is more important than total weight.

I'm running a Vaquero and replace the batt as soon as I see the performance start to degrade. When I check the batt voltage of those batteries they consistantly read at 7.4v and 7.6v. I hear that you can run them down to 6volts or something there abouts, but thats where mine starts to fall off at. I'm using the copper tops.

You can still operate with low batteries know matter how big your power supply, you still have to know when to replace them.

Usually I pay 4,50 euros for 8 AA cells (Duracell or Energizer). One good PP3 cell costs about 4,00/4,50 euros (same brands).
AA cells last 5/6 times more than PP3...this is math...

With this mod You travel with costant high amperage for more time...

Psicological side...

Getting caught up with the thread ...

Personally I have found light weight is important to me but if it isn't balanced, the advantage is lost. With the 12 x 10 coil akille68 uses a lot, a Cibola or Vaquero is very nose heavy. A nose heavy set up puts a lot of torque on the body.

I have been playing with a set up to off-set the coil weight by adding weight behind the arm rest.

Even though I am making the detector heavier, it swings easier and puts less torque on my elbow, shoulder, back and lets me hunt longer.

The handi box worked nice for a load of batteries.
Bigger cells definitely last longer than the collection of smaller cells in the same machine!

It might be fun to solder a chain of batteries and insert them into the upper shaft.
