Cibola and the Pinpoint? Do you use it?

:Left4Dead

New member
I have a new Cibola and have found when looking at older sites, I tend to just turn the threshold all the way to get better depth of smaller items. I have not used the pinpoint and dont really need it. I find that by making a quick x on the item its really easy to find?

Anyone else find this to be true? I know the pinpoint or all metal mode will help determining size, but....what you do you guys think.

Not much at all in my case.
I use a Vaq, and I hunt with a concentric and lately a large 10X12 DD, and Xing or the pullback method gets me extremely close and I am very good with my Propointer so that gets me to the exact spot I need to dig every time.

I have the "V" and never use the pin-point on it. It's so accurate that I just go over the target, x it, size it, dig it! I always use a hand held for finding the target after digging - you know how these Tesoros can detect a small BB at several inches.

I have a Vaquero and the only time I use the pinpoint button is to recheck my ground balance without manually turning the
Disc. control to all metal.
This way I can check it "on the fly" and not have to worry about resetting my Disc. setting.

Humm. Then why not a silver umax? Except the coil , and the" hot" insides? And the freq channels.?

The Vaquero has an all metal mode which I do use when I have a deep target or want to do a little prospecting. It also has excellent manual ground balancing.

Ditto, except now when I find a chain clasp or pendant I check the area using all metal to find the chain.
I have found 2 so far that didn't break the threshold even though I have disc at foil.

Thanks for the tip Ism.. I'll have to add that to my bag of tricks!!
Thanks,

I second that. That is a very good tip. Thanks.

How does the depth of the 10x12 DD compare to the 9x8 concentric coil?

Chains are hard to find because of their shape.

On my last hunt, I found 2 silver ones that hardly registered on my Vaq or my F2 on air tests even coiled up...and my friend I was hunting with an E=Trac had to scrape them on his coil to get a reading.
My Compadre, however, found them with ease in the ground an inch or 2 down.

Maybe a little more, but in my soil with high mineralization and a vein of natural iron ore running through it, nothing gets very deep around here...even E-Tracs.

I will be relocating to Kansas soon so I am looking forward to comparing these two coils under much better conditions.

Glad when I can offer some helpful ideas. I just wish I thought of it a long time ago...I think I missed a few chains over the years.

I've used the X method instinctively ever since I bought my Conquistador new. I never even knew about any pin pointing at that time. And it works great. Especially when the target sneaks out of the hole with some of the dirt from my digger.

I have done 90% of my hunting in the all-metal mode this year. The pinpoint button just puts the detector in all-metal mode. I find the button very useful for finding tatgets and then checking in the disc mode. The all-metal mode is extremely sensitive to all metals, it will find targets at least 2" deeper than in disc mode. I also use it to check the ground balance, or make a quick transition from disc to all-metal without moving the disc knob. I also find when I hunt places that have been previously hunted out, that hunting with the button pushed in/all-metal targets are more easily found beause of the extreme sensitivity to small targets and other targets that are close but not nessesarily under the coil.

I always use the pinpoint, but not really to pinpoint the target, I can tell how deep the target is by the volume in AM better than in Discrimination plus I can outline the target in AM to give me a better idea of what might be under the coil.

I to have a Conquistador uMax with a switch instead of a pushbutton like the replacement Cibola. I like that you can use the switch & hunt in all-metal mode instead of holding down the button.(less hassle). Tesoro made that modification probley to highlight the pinpointing feacher (nice red button).

Wish my Vaquero had the switch instead of the push button................OR a spring loaded trigger switch under the main housing as the pinpointer. You know for those ichy trigger fingers.
