Lots of variables, when you consider target separation, ground conditions and sensitivity levels. On the CTX, both Auto and Manual Sensitivity registers from 1–30. So I suppose you could say that there are three ranges....low, medium and high. Typically, the higher Auto Sensitivity setting your CTX selects, the more moderate the ground conditions. If you are hunting in the dirt, a very low Auto Sensitivity indication usually suggests a high level of positive mineralization. To maximize the performance in this type of soil, you might benefit from using manual Sensitivity, and raise the level to where it is just below chirping.
As to selecting a Target Separation to optimize hunting in a specific site, take a look at a blog post I made on Minelab's website: CTX 3030 Target Separation... more than a random choice.
