Choosing a Whites Metal Detector

keywest21252

New member
Hi,

I am new to metal detecting and I'm in the process of choosing a metal detector. My initial interest is in coins and jewelry in the New England area as well as some beaches here and in Florida. Two different models have been recommended to me: Whites MTX E-Series or M6 Matrix Series.

I wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations about a comparison between these two models. Especially considering me first starting out in metal detecting and for use in the future?

Thanks,

MARK

If you want it really simple with tone ID go for the M6.
If you don't need the tone ID but if you want a prospecting and relic mode the MXT is the right detector. Both have the same depth. I use the M6 and love it. Make sure to get a small coil for the detector you buy. (4x6 DD or 5.3 concentric)

If you do more coin hunting I would go with the M6.
The MXT has a very good relic mode with mix audio.
I have the M6 for coin hunting.GET THE 5.3 COIL FOR THE M6 AND IT WILL BE A COIN KILLER SETUP.
I use the M6 and XL PRO with 5.3 coils for coin.
I replace my 950 coil on my water unit with a 6 inch coil.
COINS WILL FILL MY BAG THIS YEAR.:clapping:

I have an MXT and love it!! It's the best detector I've ever used in twenty five years and five detectors. The M6 is evidently an excellent coin machine and a great starter, but the MXT is something you can grow into. This hobby grows on you, and I assure you, you WILL want to grow with it!

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the reply about choosing the White Metal Detectors.

Your recommendation goes along with similar ones I have received. It appears that they will both do a great job but the MTX leaves some room to grow.

Can you tell what some things that the MTX can do that the M6 cannot. As I stated in my first question, I am new to this and I am trying to learn from experienced people like yourself so I can avoid expensive mistakes.

Thanks, Mark

Hi, Both my wife and I use MXTs and we love them. I have a hunting buddy that sold his M6 and bought a MXT. He wanted a detector with 3 choices,Coin & Jewelery, Relic and Prospecting. Since he got it last summer he has done very well with it. I personally can't tell you anything about the M6. I would say that if its a Whites is has to be good detector. We equip our MXT's with the White's 6X10 coils and the 4.5x7 Excelerator coils. My wife liked her 4x6 coil but when she began using my 4.5x7 excelerator coil she found that she preferred it over the smaller 4x6 and her increase in finds was proof of that. She now has her own 4.5x7 coil. I am evaluating a 6" Excelerator DD coil for Kellyco and I have found it to be a very hot small coil. I don't know when Kellyco will market them but it would be a coil that you might want to look at. Kellyco also sells the very good 8" DD coil that has found a lot of success. If I can be of further assistance feel free to send me a pm. Good luck with your future decisions. HH Dennis in Idaho

Hi Monte,

Thanks for the great information. It's not easy making these decisions when you are new to the sport and don't want to make an expensive mistake. I think al the resonsives have suggested the smaller 6-7 inch coils.

Thanks again,

MARK

I have the MXT and it's the best detector I've used since the late 70's. It is easy on battery use, great for coin and relic hunting, and has excellent depth. Digging a war of 1812 site I dug a 3" square nail at 14". That's pretty darn good! I like the 5" Excelerator coil from Kellyco for coin hunting in trashy areas. The white's coils are excellent, too. I use the 9.5" coil for relic hunting. You will not be disappointed in this machine. I can't comment on the M6 or any of the others.

I just ordered up a MXT tonight. I was given an old Bounty Hunter that didn't work and was able to use it. After finding nails, cans, tin foil and the horseshoes the kids lost I knew I was hooked. I researched for 2 weeks, read all the field tests and talked to several multi detector owners, and several dealers. I purchased from Keith Cochran at Bonnie Blues because of his knowledge and honesty. Hope this helps.

I have two 5" Excelerator coils, one for MXT the other for Quattro. They are from Kellyco and are the smallest coils I have found. They both work great and pinpoint better than anything I have ever seen. They are still available for under $120 from Aardvark Detectors online (part of Kellyco), even though the Kellyco website has them listed higher...around $189, I think.

But you certainly can't go wrong getting a White's brand coil either. I just like the Excelerator because it's smaller than the others and round DD.

They have them in their eBay Store. I don't know if it's permissible to post a link, so I suggest you go to eBay and search for Excelerator Coils. They will be in the eBay stores section below the search results. I bought one from them and it came directly from Kellyco.

Hope this helps.

smaller after-market coil for the MXT & M6 is, without a doubt, the 5" EXcelerator coil! If you want small, this is it, and I have had excellent depth of detection when I used it on the MXT in dense trash.

That would be the DFX. Its multi-frequency circuit is quieter over the wet salts. Smooth performance means the ability to hear the target deeper.

Second choice would be the M6 with Seven Target Tone. Work the Discrimination all the way down, maximizing your Signal and kick on the target tone to readily identify Ferrous v Non-Ferrous.
