choosing a scoop is confusing - help what are you using

I have gone to every scoop makers website and looked , I have gone to every sponsers site and looked, there is such a vast array of scoops out there. Stainless, aluminum, a mix of both, some with full screen baskets some with punched 1/2 in holes and some with 5/8 in holes. I am not a water hunter so I dont think I need a 5 or 6 lb stainless scoop. I just want one for dry sand and maybe down to the surf line. With a full handle. Seems handles come in aluminum, stainless or wood. Some complain about the aluminum handles oxidizing and making your hands black. Wood floats if your a water hunter. I think the screen basket would clear sand better but they are usually not strong enough to you use your foot on the back of them for beach digging. So what are all you beach hunters using? I am seriously considering one I saw on here , but not for sure who made it. aluminum with a stainless steel lip rivited on and a mesh back on it with two foot supports. I think its called the oro toro?

Screen is nice for dry sand, but you may have a problem digging deep. Solid back is heavier, but will last longer and allow you to dig the wet sand.
Alum with full back in wet sand
Cheap ($30) galv body with 30" handle for dry sand
Heavy SS in the heavy surf...... ALL 3 are what I use.
What? you only have one detector? Why only 1 scoop? Start with the cheap one, and build an arsenal.....LOL HH Gayle

Go with the well built alum for what you do being mostly dry sand with a little wet thrown in now and then ,as for it turning your hands black yes it can but NOT if you paint it before use with a good spray paint with a little touch up now and then it should last a long time,I use a s/steel one here becouse of the clay/rocks we have in the lakes and yes its heavy duty but i dont have to worry about it breaking anytime soon:thumbup:you also want one with a little weight to it as it helps get down into the wet sand areas a little easy

here is your answer get a babb scoop. best scoop on the market for the money. I have an aluminum with a riveted steel lip. have used it for two years almost daily and it shows little wear, I went through two or three scoops a year. his are welded where others are not and it was under $200.
hope this helps.
Eric

The satisfaction that comes from buying a quality product remains long after the thrill of cheap price has faded away. You'll do well with a Babb's Scoop, I did!

Try something different. 6 years ago my hunting partner and I went to OBX and met Ray Midget aka seaweed the OBX sand pirate he used a army pack shovel, I used my long handle heavy scoop .As we detected he cut out coins an trinkets as fast or faster than i did. I had my pack shovel with me on this trip and started using it.Now I only take my scoop to the beach if I plan to go into water deeper than 8 inch's. When using my pack shovel I turn blade to 90 deg. hit the sand and pull back toss sand scan pick up coin. I went too some yard sales and found the pack shovel $5.00 liter and ez to carry use it just about every ware.Don't get some piece of crap that folds up and fit in your pocket..Also makes a good defence tool if some rude dude gets in your face.

I use the shovel too but use the scoop because I have lost several coins and one ring in the surf. I found the scoop helps me protect my find and my hole.
Someone did try and rob me one night at Myrtle Beach. Thinking I had $$$$, well I had tabs, foil and a bunch of bottle caps. the scoop is long and can be used like a staff plus it is a non threatening item.
Buy both, a scoop from Babb and a shovel, go to a Army Navy surplus store and get a good one. It does come in handy.

I make my own, gives me something to do, have one son (robrcer) that has broken handels off beach hunting many times, now make that area where it attaches to the scoop double thick and no more problems.

He didnt tear one up all summer but I have to admit he and I didnt get out much at all, him with a full time job this summer and me with a bum shoulder. Plus I think he figured out what girls are LOL, its just me the old man now.

Bill Babbs scoop is the best ive ever used.

I seen it on a website and it was called the oro toro but not for sure who makes it. I think I saw it on pro scoops site. Just wondering how that mesh screen holds up at the back of the scoop and are those two foot supports able to handle foot pressure with out bending in towards the screen?

I've used mine in some really hard shell bottom here in the LI Sound, no problems. You get the light weight if aluminum, strength of SS and sifting of a screen basket. It doesn't get much better.

I run across a few babbs scoops here and there but is there one place you can see all the models he makes?

Ez rider who makes that scoop you use?

I went to one site called sandman treasure scoops then its titled pro scoops with that oro toro model like the one your using ez rider. Is that a babbs scoop?

My twoo friends !

Mit yes it is, called a Oro Toro. I dont know if he is still makeing scoops
