If memory serves me correctly Spain was one of the original 13 or so countries that formed the European union.
The countries gave up their own currencies in lieu of the Euro which is the officialcurrency of EU member states.
The Euro trades and the exchange rate fluctuates as any other recognized currency.
At today's exchange rate a Euro is worth about $1.35 or so, making your 50 euro cent coin worth approx 70 cents.
Every EU member accepts the Euro. It's been a few years since I handled any Euro coins but I recall each country has their own markings on Euro coins similar to how we have different state quarters here.
