I was changing my 9 volt battery last evening when it occured to me that have had one going on to 4 years, and it still works great. The yellow paint is slowly fading and wearing off, but the electronics work great. I have used all of the above, and have had eventual problems with each of them. The tuning knobs wear out, they don't function well in the cold, they break along with other issues.

However, the Garrett Pro Pointer just keeps on beeping along.......definitely a well designed piece of equipment.:please:

Must agree with you John, used mine for the first time yesterday.

Another excellent product made by Garrett.

Yeah, it's pretty solid. Hard to visualize metal detecting without it now that I've been using one for the past two months.

The only thing that would make it better would be micro-LEDs mounted on the cap or somewhere that would indicate which side of the pointer is closest to the object. Sometimes it's hard to tell, so you have to stick the pointer in the hole and twist it all different angles to find the strongest signal.

I know it may represent a technical challenge, but my job is to come up with ideas, and let the talented, well-paid people come up with the solutions.

And while I'm at it, how about an LED backlight for the AT Pro for night hunting?

last weekend when I was hunting exposed lakebed and forgot I had it on and waded out into the water. I thought that plugging and sealing the speaker hole and putting some silicone grease around the battery compartment threads would keep the water out but I forgot one thing....the hole where the LED light is. When I came out of the water I realized I was still on my mesh belt and laid it down to put my gear away and it started going nuts!! I opened the battery compartment and it was dry. When I got home, I tried a new battery and it went nuts again. Dang it!! So I opened it up and when I pulled the guts...water!! Evidently not the first time some had gotten in there either as a lot of the connections on the board were corroded. I might send it in to Garrett, but I doubt there's any hope for it. I've ordered and received a new one, cuz they are great, just keep them out of the water...of any kind....period. It would suit me if they made one without a speaker(useless) or a light (useless). Put an o-ring on the battery compartment and you would have a GREAT pinpointer...not just a great one!!

All you have to do to get it to do what you just mentioned is detune it, just like a coil. Hold a piece of metal 1/2 inch away from the tip, shut it off, then turn it on again. Now, you pretty well have to be touching it in the hole for it to beep.
