Checked out an old homestead site today...First silver of 2008

Well, I would not call it a hunt. It was more of a scouting mission. I have not gotten out to detect yet this year so I took advantage before the snow came through this afternoon.

I had an all day business meeting to get to this morning, but the route took me near a wooded area that shows up as a homestead on an 1859 map. I only had about 40 minutes so I grabbed my Ace 250 with the intention of searching for the cellar hole or some other sign of the homestead, such as iron or old trash.

I found what appears to be a privy hole or a well (how can I tell the difference?) and some old stones which indicate the home was nearby. I dug the 1963 Rosie and the 1930's or 40's GM Key near the privy, which leads me to believe the site has not yet been hunted. It is always nice finding silver, even if it is not a particularly old coin!

I will keep you posted when I return to the site, however with the forecast calling for more snow this weekend it might be some time before I return!

That is a cool key. Never saw one that old before.

Looks like a 1960's Chevy key. Whadda you think Bill?

the GM logo is pre 60's

Well, you got silvered today, which is more than I can say for myself. I took a lot of pictures and wrote a lot of drivel and minutiae in the story I just posted, but my finds were blah. One crummy 1940-D Wheatie.

I had fun, though.

By the short tumbler design I'd say 40-50's. I'm going to have to drag out all my keys some day and post them. I've got a big jar full. Could start my own key shop. :)

Bill

I thought I'd share a picture of all the keys I've found since starting to swing.........
