Rick and I were out one day this past week detecting an old canal workers camp from the 1827-1832 construction phase of the Rideau Canal system. The tag Rick found was about 10 inches down in the forest floor. At this camp there were sappers and miners brought in to quarry the stone and laborers for all the grunt work needed. It's possible this tag belonged to an Asian worker that perhaps did camp laundry or in fact worked on the rail line adjacent to the camp. It's pure silver as the test on it showed. We also found some pretty cool blacksmithing artifacts as there was a blacksmith set up at each lock station to fashion the daily needs of the lock building. We are going to go back again soon to see what else can be found. What a sweet find.............cheers and HH ev1.

Any ideas out there regarding the writing on this piece?

When I can find an object related to an event\site, they are indeed a facinating little treasure. Interesting and unusual find you have there.

Great find and nice work on researching the camps and areas of early activity. Looking forward to seeing your future finds from the area.

Very Cool indeed! :surprised: Back when guys actually had to use a shovel to dig a canal...it may have some great value as now it seems a lot of Chinese have money to buy the heritage of their ancestors.

The Rideau Canal system is one of the current 981 (as of 2013's updated list) Unesco World Heritage sites. The canals were added in 2007 to Unesco, so yes there is a great history there. For the record this detecting was in fact done off the canal sytem properties. As perhaps many of you aren't aware that detecting on a Unesco site anywhere in the world is absolutely banned with a let's say federal punishment. I did the research on the areas available to detect last winter that are not slated as heritage.
