Which gold unit best for a beginner between these detectors GMT,Scorpion,or Gold Bug ll.Excuse my lack of knowledge of Gold Detectors. Thanks Ron

IMHO, between those units get the GMT as first choice. Definitly not the Scorpion and the Gold Bug II is very good but only has a Manual GB and not as deep as the GMT either.

The cheaper, new silent search Whites GMZ is easier to operate but it does not have iron discrimination-ID. Also you could look at the MXT, TDI, and Garrett Infinium LS.

Other gold units are the Lobo ST, X-Terra 705, and Eureka Gold.

IMO The GBII is the best, the GMT is the easiest to learn and use. and avoid the Scorpion. I personally prefer a manual ground bal.

David, how would the older GM2,3,4 compare with the GMT. The previous analog GM4DB would it perform well enough to consider. Thanks HH Ron

The GBII will get you the smallest gold of any detector, but being a manual ground balance unit is not the best for a beginner.

These are all good detectors, but they are all predesessors of the GMT. They are all manual ground balance units. Some beginners can't learn to ground balance them. Get the GMT with auto ground balance and tracking. Let the computer chip do the work for you. You can also manually ground balance the GMT if you want to.

They are all good of course but I agree with snakejim, get the GMT which has the stock 10" and also get the extra 6" and 14" coils if you want. Got to love that AutoTrac.

Gold Bug 2 is really hot with the 6". light weight too. I had a Garrett scorpion with 2 coils I got it nearly new for only $265. It worked fine, not in the same class as the other two for sure, however you get what you pay for. For the best chances at finding something try a GB2 with the small coil. Also consider a the MXT, a very proven gold nugget hunting machine it goes deeper than a GMT on larger pieces.

at728,The MXT has always been one of my favorite Whites never consider it a gold unit, which would give a hunter a great all around detector. Thanks Ron

Maybe you should consider the Tesoro Lobo st, it is a good nugget hunter with auto gb and tracking and is very versatile with a disc circuit. I noticed you use a ML Explorer, Any one who can master a Explorer can G.B. a Gold Bug.
