my brother in law went to the shore two weeks ago for vacation and took his Whites XLT. His first day there his detector started to act up and was unusable. He said he used new batteries, and even changed them out. Here he got a good deal on Dollar Store batteries and was using them, not thinking much about it. I had him replace the cheap ones with Duracells this week and now he feels like an idiot. He was even going to buy a new detector. It doesn't pay to use cheap batteries in expensive electronics. With 20 plus years experience under his belt, I demoted him back to amateur status. My Cortes didn't like cheap batteries either.
Strongly Strongly Strongly Disagree. I have tested "Cheap" Batteries to Duracells in my testbed in backyard (which is a 4 year old testbed) and have repestedly come up with the same performance over and over between the two. You can state that paying more equals better quality but from my experiences I can say this with conviction "Paying more equals your just paying more"
I moved to a new house 9 year and during the process I stored some stuff over my Mothers Garage and over years I honestly forgot about somethings up there until this spring she was going to have a yardsale and told me to bring some stuff down from above the garage, while up there I found my Fishing Tackle Box I thought I had lost and inside that I have a Computrized Fishing Scale made by Rapalla and it ran on a 9volt battery which I had used some cheap Akalines from Dollar General and long behold I clicked it to see if it still worked..Poof I was amazed it worked and not only that I used it all Summer Long (not that I caught a ton of fish or anything) and STILL have not replaced batteries. I am VERY Impressed.
Now on another example I have Model Airplanes I fly on occasion and I store some in the basement in the winter and this past winter I had a 4 Channel controller using 8 Duracells that I had forgot to remove before storing and come May when I went with friends to test fly my new plane I grabbed controller to set it up to use with new plane and guess what...those higher priced Duracells had corroaded the controller and ruined it in just 6 freaking months...soo yeah I will never ever everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr use there garbage again. Do I soley blame Duracell no, it was my fault that I left them in the controller but sheesh for the overpriced value you would think they could be a tad more worthy.
Off topic....The most impressed I have ever been by a product was just recently, I got a signal of a medium slinder target about 4-5 inches deep at a school I was detecting at, it was ringing in the silver range so I said no doubt I'm digging this (yes I know some cans ring like that..I know the difference) and after cutting out a plug I saw this shiny silver looking slinder object just reflecting the sun and I thought what the heck is that, so I pulled it out and what I had found was a Cross pen that had fell out of someones pocket. It has gold clip gold tips on both ends and sparkles like it was from day 1. I thought wow this is nice and right below clip it had a named engraved on it. I took it home and wiped it off and said wonder if this thing still works and to my amazement this freaking thing still writes. I thought lets see if the person still works at the school who owned this (knowing no student could afford this) so I went to the school asked about the person and that person has not worked at school for 11 years...soo that means that Pen has been in the ground for atleast 11 years and STILL works. Very Freaking IIMPRESSIVE.
I would show pick of controller but seeing how the DURACELLS corroded it, i have since replaced it. You can pay more if you want but I will pass on that one.
We've all been there. Over the last 15 years I've used them all! I've seen them all corrode, all go South well with in the expected longevity. But over all Duracell's are by far the best out there, with Energizers coming in second. In my Tesoros cheapo batteries, on average, needed to be replaced within 10 hours while Duracell's lasted 15+, again, on average. In my MXT or Etrac, cheapo's went South in half the time of Duracell's. The one big advantage, price. But hey, with the money I saved but Tesoro's, I can afford the better batteries!
I've had excellent results from Ray O Vac alkalines. Using 9 volts in my Tesoros, and 8 AAs in several others. They are usually the best buy at the local wally world in name brand batteries. I have used Duracells and Eveready alkalines as well with no complaints, but they didn't serve any better than the Ray O Vacs. I have had some seemingly premature failures from cheapies, but they were originals inlcuded with the device they were in and no sure way to know how long they'd been on the shelf. This said, if battery life becomes an issue for me, I'll be quite happy because it means I've been able to get out detecting a lot.

Some people like the cheap batteries but I won't use them in anything. I always buy energizers or duracells and get longer life with better batteries. My local HD had a good price on 9volt duracells recently...4 pack for 2.63 per pack. I bought 3 packs of 4 9 volt duracells and a 8 pack of AA batteries
for 13.76 tax included. You can't buy cheap batteries for that price.

Once again in full agreement with you Mike.
I bought an Energizer recharge. (silver label with green & black print) These are made in Germany and are "cheap" (can't remember cost)
This thing will give 9-10 beeps fully charged, where a new Duracell (swear by them) will only give 8 beeps.
The thing is, I think the rechargeable might cause my Cibola to be MORE STABLE! Seem to be able to run the sens higher than without the rechargeable...or makes GB more exact? Just seems to work better...been tempted to contact Tesoro and ask about voltage/current limits and possible benefits/disadvantage of boosting.
Would like to hear your opinion on my "feeling".
Have you tried rechargeables in your Tesoros?

I never used rechargeable batteries in my MD's. I did use them years ago in other products but it seemed like they died a little faster. Based on your results it sounds like they might be great. I'll give them a shot - always open to suggestions. My "V" never gives any more then 8 beeps on battery check with new batteries, and I always change them out when I get 4 beeps. I'll pick up the rechargeable Energizers this weekend and give them a try - Thanks for the tip.
Thanks,
Mike/'53Silver
There's a Batteries Plus store in town where I've been buying batteries for the last 2 years.
So far I've had great luck with their "Nuon" brand of AA & AAAs and have used them in electronics and in my Garrett detector. The batteries seem to last as long as any of the big name brands.
Their 9-volt batts are named "Werker" and are made in Belgium; They work quite well in my Tesoros.
Originally I tried the Nuons out of desperation from trying to keep up with my teenagers' and their electronic "needs" but I've stuck with them.
The prices seem pretty good so I'm pleased. Someday I'll try rechargeables but I'm pretty lazy.
i wont be buying Duracell or energizers again waste of my money, they start high powered and slowly lose power where the rechargables i use are constant power from start to finish, trick with rechargables is not to run them dry just keep topping them up after every hunt and they will last a long time, everyone uses what works for them but i got sick of buying battery's all the time, use 9.6 volt in the drop in Tesoros and 1.6 volt AA's in the Tejon notice the difference from the pre charged battery's power wise they are nickle zinc and lots don't like them but i have had no problems with them same goes with those don't run them dry just keep topping them up might be a bit extra work but money saving is huge and like mentioned in a previous post machines run hotter and more stable.

My opinion is that he said his brother was on vacation. If he was detecting around the hotel. I have had many reports of people getting false readings in that area. The high power WIFI does cause interferance with metal detectors. He even said he changed his batteries and it would do the samething. You can buy a wreless router at wally world that transmits 1600 feet. just think what the big Hotels are using.

I also agree with you Mike. Batteries are one thing I won't go cheap on. That goes for detectors, smoke alarms, cars etc. That's like putting CVS brand batteries in an ETRAC
The use of WiFi around the hotels is something I didn't think about. But he did try the detector at home to show me the problem and get my 2 cents of opinion. It was doing the same thing at his house also. Changing to the better batteries cured the problem.
Wanted to clarify a new discovery. (for mike5853)
I'll only get more than 8 beeps with the rechargeable if the phones are plugged in with the volume set low.
The internal speaker must be a real current hog.

No problem. How many hours do you get? I usually replace my batteries at 15 hours or when I get 4 beeps and pretty much use headphones 95% of the time.
The rechargeable gets about 5hrs for me.
Works good for an alarm clock to remind you that you've been detecting non stop for 5hrs when the Tesoro starts going nuts.
I just threw it in right off the charger and got 10 beeps with the HP's out and the volume all the way down.
Still convinced the extra volts and amps are worth the shorter life due to perceived enhanced stability.
I do know that when i received my F5 and, a Detector Pro pistol probe that, both stressed the problems a cheap battery can cause to both.
The PISTO PROBE was faulty. Upon calling CMD (who sold both) the first thing they went through was my battery brand. Take it for what it's worth.
After upgrading to CFL lights and wire less internet in my house i cant even do a air test on any of my detectors.
All just gives them the fits.
As far as the Batteries go i have used cheapos a few times and never had a problem.
If you ever Metal detect in mexico take your own Batteries as they are quite spendy there.
And there made in mexico ones are not so hot
