Chattering

Why does my f5 sometimes chatter like crazy when cutting my plug and sometimes while swinging. I try adjusting the gain and thrshold but no go. Disc will help but then I can't search for gold and nickels. And the batteries are fresh.

I've had other detectors do something similar. I figured it was because when I sat it down to cut a plug the coil was picking up EMI because it no longer was reading the ground

Ground Balance is changing when you lay it down.

daddy flea may be right, if you can lock the balance try that. However, I've never had a similar problem with manual ground balance detectors. Are you possibly using an electronic pinpointer? I have found the need to make sure the coil and pinpointer are well separated when stopping to retrieve a target with several of my detectors. If it only happens in certain areas, I'd be suspicious of electrical interference from buried cables or similar.
