Chatter question

I have a question about chatter. I'm trying to use my 12 or 121/2 inch imaging coil on my 2500 and all I get is chatter or overload noise. I forgot I was using rechargeable batteries and did a factory reset. After this the top cursor was jumping all over the place and I changed the menu selection for nicad batteries. Then, it said the batteries were low and I installed brand new regular batteries and made sure to change it from nicad to regular batteries in the menu. No matter how small the target, when I pinpoint and get within an inch or two of the ground all I get is chatter. I found a 3 inch section of brass or copper and under it a washer, but still got the chatter for these small object. Did another factory reset to no avail. I tried running the coil cable up the shaft 10 to 12 inches and tieing it off with electrical tape and that did not work and now I just have it wound around the shaft and connected to the housing. It doesn't matter if I put it in jewelry, custom, coins or all metal, I still get the chatter. I checked the batteries for good connections and wipe down the coil and I'm still having problems. The soil does not have a lot of minerals and I reduced my frequency from 4 to 3. Any higher than 4 and it makes a lot of chatter also. I figure I'm doing something wrong. Can you more experienced members help me figure this out. This is the same coil I found the buffalo/indian head nickel with the other day.

I solved the problem. It's the headphones. I took them off and went back over the same area and no chatter. If it's not the headphones, it's the jack they plug into. I will get another pair of headphones and if that fixes the problem, I have eliminated that possibility. If not, it's the place where the headphones plug into the jack. I will have to run this test with the stock coil also. My bets on the headphones, tho.

Come to think of it, my headphone jack went haywire one time on my 2500, but I can't remember what the symptoms were. Seems to me I just quit getting a signal intermittenly.
