Chatter and jumping numbers!

SE-5

New member
Not sure what I did.... tried doing the reset procedure, a few times, nothing worked. I am getting crazy wild chatter, even when I hold the coil up into the air. Numbers are all over the place, even when holding the coil up. No EMI interference in the area, I was in my back yard which I have hunted many times. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Recheck all your connections and make sure they are tight inside control box. Inspect coil to see if there are any cracks in coil.

I had the same problem and I actually had a defective coil, it was literally separating at the seem. Inspect your coil very closely, if not re-check all your connections or do a factory reset.

Sorry about problem Dave.

You might try it somewhere else before you assume it's defective. The neighbor may have just added a microwave tower! Lol!

i have underground cable lines running throughout my yard and in certain spots i get the same thing. move away from the spot where the cable is buried and it stops. Try slipn the machine in manual bring it down to 1. After that go up from there and see when it starts to chatter again. something to try. HH

thanks Bart for your time, and trouble shooting today. Looks like maybe the CTX is going to be heading back to Minelab... what bad timing this is as my other detector is currently en-route to Garland Texas for pin pointing issues! Gonna be a llllooooonnnnngggggggggggg few weeks.

So, what have you determined is wrong with it??? It looks as if a lot of people are sending their detectors back to Minelab, I've already spoken with three people in this forum alone within the last month who have sent their's back, kinda makes me wonder. I know this machine hasn't been on the market for that long and as with everything that is the 1st of it's type to be released wether it be a car, electronics or whatever I am always skeptical of purchasing. I bet when the ctx 3030 v.2 is released they will have addressed all of these issues but at such a high price tag I would have expected mine to start breaking atleast 6 months after purchase with heavy use (which mine does not get). Anyways, I hope I get mine back soon, I have heard from some who have sent theirs back before Christmas have not received theirs back yet, I just hope this is not the case for all of us.

Impossible to diagnose over the phone, thought maybe it was EMI so I went 4 miles away and it was still doing it. a coil issue????.... big investment to have trouble so quickly! I'm sure it won't be cheap to send back either. Time (and money) will tell....

If it's under warranty they will pick up the shipping costs, they did for me, just make sure you ask them. Ask them for a prepaid UPS label, they will send it via your email as an attachment, print it out and slap it on the box. I took the original box and it easily comes apart to you can literally turn it inside-out and put it back together so the graphics side is now inside. It makes it easy to ship w/o anyone knowing the contents inside.

Glad I could try to help. Sorry its not for a better situation. Minelab will fix it. They are great!

Sorry to hear about your coil/chatter issues. I have my old Excal in the shop right now and the guys are working on it. So far great communication with the technicians in the service department. However, it may take some time before you get it back.

With your other machine in the shop I'd try and find the silver lining in this. Might be time for another back up machine :bouncy:

Just another thought if someone you know has a CTX try their coil on your machine if it works O.K. you've isolated the coil as the problem and just sent the coil in. Alternative 2 is to buy the 6" coil and try it on the machine it it works then same conclusion on the stock coil. This will no doubt be cheaper than a new back up machine and you get that sweet 6" to keep you hunting.

Placed call in to Minelab, menu system so I left my information and waiting to hear back! wrote down all the SER #s and put them in my wallet as I am SURE they will call back when I'm not home and they will just HAVE to have that information!! Also registered all the numbers I could find on the unit and accessories.... there are allot of them!

Well, y'all have fun out there, I'll be sitting right here in my chair reading about the fun hunts you are having! GL HH.
