Here are some photo's taken 02/27/2011. You are viewing Chatham Light, which is also a smaller Coast Guard Base. Across from the Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful views you could imagine of the Atlantic, but you are also viewing the treacherous Chatham Bars. Dangerous currents constantly changing, Seals lounging on the sandbars at low tides, Yes, Great Whites waiting to feed on the Seals.
As a Coast Guard Base, of course there are Rescue Boats, but this is an unusual situation. The Rescue Boats are berthed at Chatham Pier, ten minutes down the road. There are Twin 42ft Rescue Boats stationed at Chatham. The two of them were designed to be stationed at Chatham, due to the Chatham Bars. Both have shallow Draft, and are powered by twin turbo diesels, with jet drives. No Propellers. If I remember correctly, they are numbered 42001 and 42002.
On this morning I was going to Provincetown to visit relatives, but decided to visit Chatham on the way. Provincetown is 150 miles each way from Beverly, North of Boston. I always leave around 4 to 4:30 AM to beat the traffic. This morning unbeknown to me, the Cape had a dusting of Snow. Another thing I was not aware of was that the 36500 rescue boat was also berthed at the dock this particular weekend! This was an added treat for taking photo's!
Note: I will tell you more about the 36500 later, will only mention it took part in one of the most famous rescues the CG was ever involved in.
If you enjoy Lighthouses / Coast Guard / The Sea / Vessels , stay tuned....I am posting here, due to my ol Friend, Kelley and on the Tales forum, time permitting.... I enjoy sharing Digital Images, but each has a story that goes with it.
