Charleston, SC Sites?

wildgoose

New member
I'll be there in June, very limited time but with detecting you know how that goes.
I'm looking for relic sites, even underwater.
Any Suggestions?

Hi, wildgoose. I live in the area. First thing you need to know is that metal detecting on City of Charleston property is illegal. Someone else asked about this a while back, maybe a year or two, and I told them the same thing and they, or others, (can't quite remember) tried to call me on it saying I was wrong. Trust me on this one. I'm not interested in preserving or hiding sites from anyone as I don't relic hunt anymore. All I do these days is walk the beach and you're more than welcome to join me. Mostly I hunt Folly Beach because I live very close to there and it does produce something from time to time but the beach renourishment program pretty much covers up the older stuff so finding fairly recently lost items is about the best you can hope for there. Isle of Palms can produce some good finds and there is a county park right on the beach where you can pay a fee to park. There is no free parking on Isle of Palms during tourist season that I know of but on Folly you can park for free on some of the side streets as long as you aren't trespassing on someone's property and all four wheels are off the street. Just make sure to look for NO PARKING signs. There are still people who relic hunt down here I suppose but they are either trespassing or have permission to hunt private property and that permission isn't given so freely anymore. I really hate to paint a glum picture for you but Charleston simply isn't what it used to be for metal detecting. I can remember being to hunt in Charleston's public parks but that was back in the early 80's. As for diving, I haven't suited up since the early 80's due to losing an ear and being told by the doctors not to dive anymore. I used to know some divers but they mainly hunted quite a ways north of Charleson and mostly for fossils but relics were found. I don't know about now as I've been out of touch with most of them for a long time. Sure wish I could paint a better picture for you. I used to find slave tags, artillery shells, buttons, you name it but that was a long time ago. All of the places I used to hunt have either been developed or placed off limits. If I can be of further help send me a pm. HH!!

Jerry, thanks for the information, I also usually hunt Folly Beach area and not so much downtown area of Charleston, since it is so restricted. I should be around Folly Beach around May 12 if I don t get stuck detecting around Hilton Head. I never find much in Isle of Palm or Sullivan Islands. Everyonce in a while I find a place to park off the road. gosports1 aol com goldnugget Charlotte,NC

Thaks for the info. I'll be down there June 13th - 16th, mostly diving for fossils. Folly Beach is a possibility.
I think I'll try around some of the old plantations around the river
