Our trip was going a little smoother the farther south we go. The road started to get slushy and wet instead of solid ice and snow. The fuel stations were everywhere, and the coffee was getting better.

We pulled in for fuel at the town of Chetawyn and I got a little idea of how fun it is to live in Canada. The gentleman pumping our diesel noticed the Alaska plates and started to ask questions. It turned out that he had all he could stand of winter and was wondering if he could sneak into the trailer when he found out we were bound for Virginia. I got a lecture on the nature of "Butt freezing" and winter insanity. Vernon was inside the store and missed out on our little talk. I was wondering if we would make it out without the guy before it was over. What a character!
We headed out again after a snack and more coffee. We noticed that the animals on the road looked a little smaller. Deer were replacing moose as the most dodged critters.

Night fell again and the blackness with all the overcast was impressive. I was driving along with Vernon snoring in the seat next to me. The sky cleared up and night sky was kinda pretty after all the storms we had been through. I soon had another truck coming up on us in the darkness. The rear view mirrors were lit up like a Christmas tree, but no truck. It was then that I realized what was going on. The northern lights were setting the north sky ablaze. I pulled over and got out to watch for a while. Vernon awoke and thought I had gone crazy, stopping in the middle of nowhere to watch the aurora. Being from Alaska he saw this a lot, but I had never seen such a sight. It was worth the whole trip to see. I did not get any pictures to turn out, but it was fantastic.
The night turned into day again and the snow was even gone this far south. We were in the deep south of Canada, Eh y'all. It was looking better all the time.

We still had the dreaded border crossing ahead of us. With all the increased security, we were told that getting into the U.S. would be tough. After the rubber hose treatment at the Canadian border, we were getting worried as the crossing came closer.
Stay tuned for the next chapter. "Davey, you shut up and let me do the talking."
