Chapter 2. The Boys take on water hunting and Hurricane Elsonetta arrives....

The hot weather at the ghost town lead the boys to make a decision, they wanted to water hunt! Also, the weather report for tomorrow was rain and stormy weather. They held a meeting at the truck. Elson and his spur, and Falk, took a vote. Water hunting the rest of the day, and leave early for Vegas the next morning while it was raining. The spur cast the deciding vote. We loaded up and the truck started, ahem, and we started our 150 mile drive to go get the water detecting equipment and head for the lake.

These boys have a reputation on the forum for being quite the eaters, but they only wanted to make a " To go" order at a Jack in the Box on the way home. The amazing thing was that while driving a long at 75 and eating at the same time there was never a time when it got quiet. Those guys were arguing and giving each other such a bad time, between gulps, that I threatened to turn the truck around right now if they did not behave. That just made it worse.

When we got back to their motel, Nancy and the girls had just arrived from a day of shopping. The said that they would go get some food and meet us up at the lake for a picnic while we water hunted the swimming area. Nice plan. I had noted that the line of thunder storms heading our way were just a little west of us and moving fast. Oh what the heck, a little lightning and wind never hurt anyone, right? By the time we got to the lake the wind was just starting to pick up. (In Idaho the weather can change very fast. It was about 95 when we arrived at the park and 70 when we left!)

On the way to the lake I was giving a short simple class on water hunting to the guys. As soon as the truck stopped rolling into the parking spot the doors flew open and those guys could not get into the water fast enough! It looked kinda like the opening to a Baywatch re-run, minus the good looking babes. Though Elson found a key chain in the sandy beach, while running no less, Falk struck first blood.

A genuine USA quarter, his first water find. You may note in the photo that he had a bandaid on his arm. This was to cover the wound that he got installing my battery in the Wal Mart parking lot before dawn that day. It was pointed out to me , several times, that he had been wounded working on a darn Ford. Ya, at LEAST several times. The wind was picking up pretty well as Elson scored. He let out a whoop ( I hope the spur did not get jelous of his new find. Elson had found a gold ear ring!

With this "Blood in the water" gold find the water sharks really started getting excited. The only thing was that the wind was now at about 40 mph and the lake was starting to white cap. No rain was falling yet but the water was getting Bricky. How is that Bobbie? If you look out in the lake past Falk, you can see how it is shaping up.

Elson was over by the docks as the boaters were getting the heck out of there. Those docks were acting like a wave break and we were protected somewhat from what Falk would later name "Hurricane Elsonetta".

It take a pretty good wind to produce swells and white caps on a small lake, but this storm was getting it done. Soon the waves beaking over the docks were spraying us 50 feet away! Lightning started to crack around us and we declared an advance to the rear. Just as we got into the truck for shelter. the rain came down in buckets. It made the cow and the flat rock story seem like a mist. Click on the pict and see the huge rain drops going almost horizontal.

There were trees breaking and limbs hitting the ground as the girls arrived to have our picnic. The pulled up along side of us and a gave me that "Look" that we all know.

After about a half hour the rain let up a little. and the boys bailed and started hunting again. Betty rolled down her window and asked me if the boys wanted to eat their supper with them. I just shook my head and pointed to the furious water hunters out in the storm. " I think they are lost to us" I said, "Water hunting has hooked another pair!" The only thing that got them to stop was the fact that when you are soaking wet, the wind is blowing 40 mph. and the temp has just dropped 25 degrees, you start to get cold. There was a little name calling about each others lack of manhood, but they finally agreed to call it quits. We sat in the truck for another half hour or so and laughed at the whole day. I got to tell you, no amount of finds could compare to the fun we all had on our misadventures. I have not laughed that much in years.
